Default Expansion tank/hose needed for my 940 - where from?

Hi All,

The bottom of the expansion tank on my 940 is leaking and I need another one ASAP - can’t seem to order one online to arrive quickly unfortunately. I also could do with the coolant hose that attaches to it if possible.

Any ideas where I could order them from? I’m going to try Volvo dealer tomorrow.

Alternatively anyone in Yorkshire got either spare? I am in Huddersfield but can travel to York/Leeds/Rotherham/Sheffield.

Volvo dealer is your best option although, when I bought some last year they had to order them from Sweden which took a few days to arrive.

The last one I ordered was from Skandix. Ordered on a Monday, arrived from Germany on the Thursday. Other suggestions are to try Rufe, or there appear to be plenty of pattern parts available on eBay.

For example,

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-940...k/302833503774

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-940...e/283471727193

Personally, I’d avoid secondhand since the plastic goes brittle where the lower hose attaches and they all start to leak eventually.

Granted it's aftermarket but it'll certainly get you out of trouble and they're usually quick to deliver.

I actually ordered from them but they rang me as they didn’t have the hose in stock so I cancelled the order. Really nice company.

ANYWAY looks like my local Volvo dealers has come up with the answer - got an email from them this morning saying they can get me the tank and hose today. Not cheap but genuine Volvo items and local pickup too. Great service!

Lakes is always worth a shout if it’s somewhat near you. Plenty of motors still in stock if you need a stop gap before getting a brand new one 👍

Cheers

According to his location, he's in W Yorks so nowhere near him. I totally forgot, i have a good 7/940 used expansion tank sat on my kitchen window sill. In fairness though i exhumed it as it was possibly needed by someone on the Rover forum. They haven't responded to the answers they had to their query about one so it'll be going back into storage soon unless Rob wants/needs it.

Thanks all for the replies. The Volvo dealer came up trumps! Many thanks to Clive Brook Volvo in Huddersfield for not only replying to my online enquiry first thing in the morning but being able to order the parts I need to arrive the same day. I got the expansion tank and lower hose for just over £60 which i thought was great - always good to get genuine parts.

Drained the system, put the new bits on, used the old hose clamps as they were much better quality than the new ones I bought just in case. Filled up from some silicate based antifreeze and its all working fine again. I suppose I could have gotten away without buying the hose but one end didn't look 100% and I'd hate to fill it all up again just for it to leak.

Didn't take too long, a couple of hours? The thing that made it longer than I expected was having to take bits out of the engine bay to retrieve the small socket i dropped by accident and buried itself under the washer bottle....

Cause of the leak? The metal insert in the pipe under the tank had corroded and expanded, splitting the plastic and stopping a good seal.

Glad you're all sorted!

THe cause of the leak was why i have the spare one sitting around, went through3 Rover 800 OE expansion tanks in the first 3 months of owning mine then converted it to a 7/900 expansion tank. They also suffered exactly the same problem and cracked up as well, Rover weren't using 100% virgin polymer.

Volvo on the other hand did and the vast majority were ok - later ones from when Ford had their fingers in the pie (1996 on, from 99 they had all the pie!) weren't so good.

On the subject of hose clips I found JCS 'Hi-Grip' Stainless Steel Hose Clips to be a good replacement. The marine grade kitemarked ones. Whilst the Volvo originals are very good the ones lower down in the engine compartment do eventually start to rust. These won’t!
