The latest update mentions software issues.

This is great to see, I really hope a few more motoring press get onto the tech issues people are having with these cars, it will surely get the message through.

The car is such a brilliant piece of kit, I really love it, road noise aside. All the technical problems aren't that concerning to me, annoying, but not concerning. I work in the software industry, so know that with the right effort behind it, the glitches can surely be ironed out.

What I do wish is that both Volvo UK and dealers had a much better hold on the problems and communicated better to users. I suspect that Volvo must be onto these forums, they surely can't be oblivious. I just hope its a key priority to get these gremlins sorted.

No, No, No, This madness must stop! I'm fed up with bad programming:
  • The set-top box which confuses it's listing if you 'page up' past channel 1. And it crashes too often requiring pulling out the cable from the back (hard) and plugging it back in again (even harder).
  • The washing machine when it crashes and spends hours pumping out until somebody notices and switches it off at the mains.
  • Even my freezer is in a permanent state of reboot.
  • The new car stereo, which reports I'm listening to "EAGLESOOD MAC", I might only be a hobbiest programmer, but I know a buffer overflow when I see one.

Despite all these bugs they keep their code really secret. Probably from embarassment! Why don't they let the code go free and allow people to fix it themselves?

Meanwhile, what you guys all need to realise is that the Sale of Goods act is retro-active. That means it needs to have been capable of doing what was claimed on the day it was sold, even years afterwards. A software update obviously breaches this law. This leaves the consumer with a choice, they are entitled to keep it, have it fixed, or choose a full refund at the consumer's own discretion and for any reason they like.

Man, if I was the kind of guy who buys stuff instead of aquiring pass-me-down's, I'd not be tollerating this nonsense for one minute.

What happens when you try and 'fix' something and make things worse? Should customer services be responsible for troubleshooting these scenarios?

What happens when someone creates a malicious version which you install thinking its an 'update' but in fact shuts your fridge down and all your food goes off?

I'm not suggesting the manufacturer's shouldn't be continuously improving their software, but the notion that all software should be publicly available doesn't really work for everything

No. But the fix is no different to getting an update. Load the old program back in.

I'd kick myself for installing software that was dodgy. Then I'd put the old program back in. And I'd spot this was happening before the food went off.

I do take your point, actually. It's just that everywhere I go I see bugs in code that should have been tested more thoroughly. And I know if I'd spent thousands of pounds on a car like this, I'd be furious.

We do want one, as it happens. Fell in love with it when we saw one parked in Halfords car-park. We're just waiting for them to become realistically affordable second-hand. But I'm starting to worry.

Not if the "update" just bricked the controller.

What if it was the LKA or ACC that went off rather than your food?

The review says the road noise is worse on models without air suspension. Does anyone know if this is the case? It would solve my dilemma over 19" vs 20" wheels - just get air suspension!

My vehicle has air suspension and in my opinion the road noise is terrible for the class of car. See this post.

May be this is the 'Chinese Goods touch' factor with the Swedish technology.

If the Japanese took over Volvo, they would offer a different customer experience.... would have made all the difference maybe.... (no offence)

You would hope that Volvo have their own standards. I deal with some Chinese suppliers and it is true they have a different concept on Customer Service, you certainly have to be very clear you will not accept something.
