Default 940 standard tyre size

I've checked the original Owners Manual, the Haynes Workshop Manual and I've searched this site but I couldn't come up with a definitive answer - what size tyres were originally fitted to the 940/945?

The car currently has 185/65s fitted although I can't remember any of my 940s or 960s having anything other than 195/65s...

Thanks,

The only 940 I've owned that came with standard wheels and tyres was a '92 944S (saloon) with B200F engine. It had 185/65 tyres on 15" steel rims. Pirelli tyres as OE equipment (P2000s I think...). I am told that estates came on 195/65 tyres, but I have no evidence for that.

My '92 940s estate runs on 185/65 x15's, according to the handbook 195x15 is optional.

For 944s (saloons) the correct tyre size should be 185/65/15 tyres, but for 945s (estates) the size should be 195/65/15. The option refers to saloons which can be fitted with the larger size tyres. The maximum size is usually taken to be 205/50/15 tyres.

All the best, Peter.

Yet Volvo would have happily sold you a set of 17" rims fitted with 225/45 tyres from their Accessory booklet. I have trouble with both my cars running 205/55s on 16" rims (both Volvo "official" wheels - Galaxy and Hydra)- they rub against the steering arm on lock, so what 225s are like I can't think. Maybe lock restrictors shpould be fitted too, but my car certainly had its wheels fitted from new - and no lock restrictor!

cheers Simon

I have the official Volvo Polaris 17inch Rims on both My 740's and run 215's and 225's with no problems.
