There is info on filling the angle gear on the forum. If I remember correctly you fill it up and take a specific amount out. Once it's filled correctly, yes you just check to see it's not leaking. As in drips on the floor or wet oil around the seam. Volvo have a simple fix if they develop a leak.

'56 Facelift with AWD Issues
I've just had a diagnostic test on my XC90 and one of the faults that has come up is
DEM-0007 Hydraulic Pressure Faulty Valve The car is going into Volvo specialist next week to investigate, but how worried should I be - could this be very very expensive like £1200 odd I've been reading, or are those serious issues really only on the pre-facelift models? We made sure we bought a facelift model to try and avoid all the AWD issues on the older ones.... not happy! Would be grateful for any comments. Thanks PS: Other 2 faults were Mass Air Flow and Injector Cylinder 5 issues... |

Guys, just a quick update.
I got the volvo specialist to change just the splined sleeve and i've now got AWD. I took it down a wet and muddy bridlepath and it handled it brilliantly. The specialist did advise that there is some slight damage to the angle gear (he has seen alot worse) and recommended I change the angle gear box as he doesn't know how long it will last. Fingers crossed. |

Dixie / all, I have an xc90 '56 plate. recently found out AWD not working. diagonsed as a faulty DEM unit - code 0007. have been quoted £1600 to replace complete unit (by a main volvo dealership, which i have had good experience with to date, must say) and fix problem. having read many posts / sites on the subject, is this necessary or can the pressure sensor (forgive me if this is wrong) not be replaced as a stand alone part and the fault codes cleared on the ECU (?). again, not the smartest with these things but it seems a lot to pay. any more thoughts / advice would apprecited.... ps - I'm no mechanic and would not try to do anything myself.... Glad you got it all sorted in the end. One lesson i have learned is that it is always better to pay something on credit card or finance, that way you can pursue the finance or dredit card company if anything goes wrong. I am still trying to pursue a dealer for issues with mine, and it looks like i will be fighting my legal insurance expense policy provider too, (just as bad as the dealer)! |

An update on my earlier post sounds a very similar story to yours in that the Volvo Specialist I took mine to couldn't find the fault and wanted to replace the whole DEM unit (yes around £1600). I mentioned on numerous occasions to the garage about replacing the sensor first but they didn't think this was necessary!! I therefore took it for 2nd opinion at a Volvo Main Dealer and they confirmed it WAS the sensor that was faulty (because I had no pressure in the pump). To cut a long story short the sensor was replaced and I now have AWD for the first time and what a difference it has made to my car! FYI If you were to buy a whole new DEM unit I understand that the sensor does come as part of that unit; so a new DEM unit would appear to have fixed the problem, but it may be that it was just because of the new sensor included, if that makes sense. I also know that if there is any fault in sensor the AWD is automatically disabled. Good luck, I hope it's just a faulty sensor for you too! |

I also have a VW Passat, 143K miles on the clock and an 06 plate, it died on the motorway yesterday, AA suspected an injector.
It was recovered to VW yesterday afternoon and i picked it up this morning washed and vacuumed with 4 new injectors, the cost, absolutely nothing. It turns out that the injectors on 06 and 07 Passats have a known manufacturing fault and VW replace them for free. It makes Volvo's response to the known fault with the spline rings even more annoying becuase if other manufacturers replace faulty parts on high mileage cars out of warranty why can't they. Brand loyalyty is hugely important, and i know where mine does and doesn't lie. Next car for me won't be a Volvo and will in all likeliness now be a VW Tiguan or Toureag |
