2018 V90 noise
Hello All,
I have a 2018 V90 D4 inscription estate. New tyres fitted August 2021. Since day one I’ve a noise, seemingly coming from over my right shoulder area, that only appears after 10 mph and stays till 70+ never changing, but varies in ‘volume’ from rough surface to smooth. Volvo mechanic says he can’t hear anything?? Noise is a cross between, wheel bearing? tyre rubbing on something but doesn’t change with speed, wind noise, and metallic vibration. It’s not tyre rumble. Just had car serviced and they didn’t find anything, on suspension or under the car. Noise goes quiet when I drop the back seats down. So, my guess is rear seats either offering more sound proofing or it’s the lower seat vibrating? Can not hear anything outside car with car at tick over. Problem I have is, how else can I remove rear seat if both plastic buttons are missing. I have a button on either end. No amount of pulling releases the seat and I suspect something got under there and is vibrating. Otherwise, awesome car. Many thanks. Last edited by Peteruk65; Jan 15th, 2022 at 14:22. |

A bit more information would help. Is it a Hum, Rumble, Swish, Rub or Tap? Does it really not vary in volume when the speed increases?
If the seat down supresses the noise then it can't be coming from the load space. For comparison, my V90 has much less noise when the seat back is in the upright position which shows the tyre noise is greater in the load compartment.

I can only describe the sound as like it was loose washer under a nut, or it sounds like the exhaust hitting something, but neither happen when going over bumps. And yes, it does not increase in volume going at speed, this one confuses me too. I’ve tried it tyre pressure low, same, I’ve had the car in neutral rolling down a hill, same, comes in about 10 mph. Can’t do it with engine off?? Before me buying the car, it failed MOT on front pads and disks, rear light cluster and had a new turbo fitted. I’m thinking they left something off, panel etc. done 14,000 miles so it can’t be the turbo. After 14,000 miles I’d have expected something to disappear or worsen. I’ve removed spare wheel and tools. I do get a similar sound as the car comes to stop, gears kick down then I assume the clutch disengages (automatic) car goes into tickover, sound is similar to old days drive shaft whir? Only as car comes to a stop. This sound is similar, but again, doesn’t change at speed? It’s stumped me for the year I’ve had the car…may 2021,now the cars been serviced and they found nothing, I’m perplexed.

So "a loose washer under a nut" implies a rattle that is tinny and light?
This type of rattle would happen as the car hits bumps? But if you mean a spinning washer under a nut that implies a very light rubbing sound. That might come from a disk brake with a stone caught in it. However, sounds of this nature would be drowned out as the speed increases. Unless you are actually getting an increasing sound that gets louder as the other noises increase?

Hi
Yes your description of a spinning washer is very close. Alas the rear pads were renewed on last service. I’m assuming a service and MOT someone would have checked for scoring on the disks by stones? Outside of disks clear, inside not sure. I’ve just driven home 30 miles, at low speeds, 30/40 ish, again the sound comes and goes (quieter) over rough road surface. It’s a strange one, I’ve left coins in the cup holder and they only rattle on really rough road surface, and bumps. With so many large panels under the car I doubt the Volvo mechanic took these off to check the exhaust? It really is like the exhaust, heat sink even diesel tank might be vibrating against something solid. Also, this noise I get as the car comes to a stop, difficult to describe the sound, a diminishing whir, as the car comes to a stop and revs drop off to idol. Clutch? Front drive shaft? I’ve no idea? Both of which I would assume would increase with road speed? I love the car so I’ll just put up with it as I have done. Pity though takes the shine off a lovely car.thanks for replying. |
