Default USB Music / Albums

I appreciate this has been mentioned on here before, but I am struggling!

What is the procedure to rip/copy music onto a USB stick to allow playing by albums?

I have taken the USB stick from our old XC90, which worked as expected in that car, and tried it in the new car. The music plays but when choosing Albums each track is individual. I know it is to do with the file naming but I can't get it to work.

What is the trick?

You have to ensure that within the ID tags for each song (file) that the fields for Album and Artist Album are the same and complete for every track within the album.

Use this to edit the tags: http://www.mp3tag.de/en/

I am hoping that after all the years of being super fussy about tagging / naming conventions for my music collection it will be vindicated with a seamless integration with the Sensus system!

No chance! I'm 99% convinced that Sensus is incorrectly interpreting the artist fields.

Thanks Lexman. The program you linked to has worked for most albums, I changed about ten as a test, two are not correct. I will do the rest now. It is a bit of a faff though, it is a pity the car is like this.

I would have preferred straight forward folders as an option as well.

I had the same issue, ensure the album artist and artist are the same. If there's loads of album artists just use "various". Then as long as the album name is consistent you shouldn't have duplicate albums listed. I can't take the credit for this, it was someone on this forum far better at tagging than me!

Lexman, how do you deal with albums with multiple artists, compilations etc.

I've tested this so see the example in the first pic. This creates an Artist called 'Various on Drive 5' and an Album called 'Driving 5'. The other pics show how it looks in Sensus. Doing it for real I'd choose better names!

For previous cars I've created my own driving compilations but I think that rather than re-tag all my self-made compilations, instead I'll copy most/all my music onto a USB stick or iPod and create 'driving' playlists instead. I haven't experimented with playlists yet but I suspect it may be an easier way of doing it. Obviously, compilation albums you've bought will need to be tagged as above.

Incidentally, everything I've read on this subject suggests that Volvo have implemented the artists tags wrongly. Taking the above example, Artist and Album Artist would be transposed so that the Album Artist would be 'Various on Drive 5' and the Artist for each track would be the actual artist on the track. Seems logical that way too. I think Apple implement it this way so changing your tags could mess up iTunes and therefore iDevices. I try to avoid iTunes so I can't be certain on this.
