You should of course set the AC to Auto. It's the best from all aspects.

It's not best from the aspect of being too loud and 'blowy' for too long - having it ticking over at a lower fan speed - once it's taken of the 'edge' in an overheated car - keeps the temperature fine.

(Yes I'm lazy and on hot days just set it to LO because it gets most cold air soonest - if I set a temp it takes a while to get there. Probably, I'm heading for a regas soon, anyway - LO is not as 'freezing' as it used to be.)

But I take your point in normal circs, just set a temp and leave it on auto. Lately, you could fry an egg on my dashboard when I get in, it's been so hot! Hence, set to LO until bearable.

i would doubt having the air con on would have any effect on a large modern engine .maybe a mpg test would confirm this .

Probably would - but I'm only responding to XC70Virgin's enquiry re MPG in general. I'm not that bothered, myself. I just thought XC70Virgin ought to know the circumstances under which that journey was taken.

Life's too short, for me, to try and do two identical journeys with air-con on and off for comparison purposes, I'm afraid. ;-)

But I think you are probably right - I suspect the difference would not be highly significant on a large modern engine.

Well I've done a deal and found a T6. Details to follow but it's white and looks very smart. Other than cop cars I've only ever seen one in white.

MPG be damned!

You'll love it. You'll just be spending a fortune on petrol - especially if you make a lot of short journeys.

I was monitoring it (until I went on a motorway journey and didn't reset the trip meters) and with most trips being less than 2 miles I reckon it was about 18mpg at average speed 16mph.

I'm also impressed you found one - they are rare. What model year and mileage?

2010 and similar to SE Lux spec and with 4C chassis clever bits. 1 owner from new, 53k miles. I do very few journeys, typically 5k per annum, and they're generally not short journeys. Overall fuel costs are insignificant really. And petrol is cheaper. This car is pretty much a luxury to have and it's a bit of a toy for me as well as being a genuinely useful family lugger. We're heading to France in it on 27th and I collect it on 24th.

Refreshing to see honest MPG being quoted rather than that bloke whose considerably richer than thou whose Bentley never drops below 88 MPG even when getting the 2 up on the autobahn on the way to his Alpine ski lodge

I have the same engine in my V70 6and can concur with your findings. It’s a fabulous engine (and car overall).

Car collected today. Definitely quick and fabulous engine. It'll be harder on fuel no doubt but what the heck. Need to convert Jap text and messages to English and remove the Japanese toll tag crap and it'll fine.
Bizarrely quiet internally compared to D5.
