Default AirCon low pressure side too high.

Daughter’s XC70, AWD, D5, my2011.
AirCon has had no maintenance since she acquired the car in 2017.
No AirCon problems until now when it isn’t cooling as much as it has been in the past. ( the ambient temperature in our area of the country is not excessive, only low to mid 20s C)
She took it for a free AirCon check offered by Halfords which revealed that the low pressure side is reading much to high.
I don’t know much about AirCon but having given myself a crash Google and YouTube course it appears that there are a number of reasons for this.
Has anyone had any similar problems and does anyone have any suggestions as to where to start.
She is booking it into a local independent who suggested starting with a leak test and recharge.

1st problem, she took it to Halfords!

NEVER take a car to Halfords or Kwikfit. Find a reputable Air con specialist. Many will even come to you. I've had my truck aircon system serviced at my house for £90, I had to replace the compressor and needed it vac'd, checked and re-gassed. The XC cost me £65 for a service. (I get them done every few years) XC had lost next to no refrigerant.

I don't know much about ac but in researching the malfunction of my air-con, I came across something called an expansion valve. It reduces the pressure from high to the low pressure in the evaporator. If this fails or is malfunctioning, presumably the low pressure side will be too high.

Too much gas in the system will cause high suction pressure in hot ambient.

That’s about it.

Refrigerant gas is directly related to temperature.

If the system is running and you have high suction pressure this can be the only answer.

Even if there was air in the system it wouldn’t cause high suction pressures. It would affect the high side.
