Hi, I have seen a V70 2.0d Ocean Race Edition for sale which I am interested in but it has 230k miles... Should I take a look or run the other way? I am waiting for info on any service history...

If it is fully serviced then it could have life in it. Don’t forget that you will have exceeded all its life design and as such all fluids will need to be binned and refilled/flushed. The bearings and belts etc will be end of life etc.

My Volvo is very much a hobby for me so changing power steering fluid is a £20 job, gearbox oil £100, AOC pump and filter £50. Coolant and cambelt cost me £250 genuine go include water pump and coolant.

If you buy it and then put it into a garage for those works alone it’s likely a 4 figure bill. If you don’t do it and the steering rack fails that’s a four figure bill.

If it has all its history and is in good condition then go for it if you are handy with the spanner’s. If you don’t want to work on it yourself then I would personally give it a mis…

I personally wouldn't be too worried about a V70 with 230k on it, assuming it stands well and has good history.

However I would have a very strong preference for one with a 5 cylinder Volvo engine - 2.4d or D5 - not the 2.0D 4 cylinder Ford/PSA engine. The 2.0D is not a bad engine and it's not unusual to see them with 200k+ on, but there aren't as robust as the Volvo units and this extends to ancillary components like starter motors, alternators etc.

If its the 2.0d PSA engine have a look at Alan Howatts channel on YouTube.
He gives a few pointers on what happens on these 2.0 diesel engines at certain mileages (taxi fleet maintenance).

What year is it?

Also, is it on ebay or Autotrader or similar?

If so, are you able to share a link to the ad?

We can then help a but more.

The 2012 metallic blue V70 Ocen Race Edition was listed as a D3, so 5 cylinder I would think at that time?

If it's badged 2.0D then it's the 4-cylinder Ford/PSA engine. D3 badged then it's the Volvo 5 cylinder.

They weren't selling the 2.0D in 2012. Garages often get confused and describe the cars they are selling as 2.0D when they are 5 pot diesels - and vice versa. When I was looking for my car I told one garage that the car they were selling was actually a 2.0D Ford/PSA engine and they weren't happy...

not exactly hard to check by searching online using the registration number (or better VIN number if you can get it) - or just look under the bonnet and count the injectors... lol
