Volvo used to recommend an air bag service at 10 year where all the pyro's were replaced.

However after testing some old cars and finding all the bags worked, they have since rescinded that advice. Hence you may find a sticker on the car saying the need doing (there is such a one on my 2003 XC90) but it's not needed.

The Neutral stop feature I assume to mean Neutral Control - basically if you stop and leave the engine running, foot on brake, in "D" the box will shift to neutral after about 10 seconds and then back into first when you lift off the brake.

Volvo started adding this a few years ago, AISIN Warner have since adopted it for all it's gearboxes.

If it is the later AW55 5-speed gearbox (superseded by the 6-speed TF80 in 2005) then it's not a problem whatsoever. On a healthy gearbox the driver wont even notice it's happened.

The gearbox fluid is a cherry red colour when new. If it's turned black that's a sign that it needs changing, especially if it has a "burnt" smell.

The above assumes the car is an automatic, if manual then no need to check.

If the DIM (instrument cluster) has been swapped from another car - the mileage from the donor car will be displayed on the DIM (and incremented as you drive). However the correct mileage will be stored in the CEM and be accessible via VIDA. Bust as said - pulling the MOT history should help with this.

It might be a bloody good car, the quality of which is hard to find now...

To Tannanton and the OP and everyone else.

The "Stop Neutral" feature when bad resulted in a BANG into 1st gear when you stepped on the gas when the light turned green. This was damaging to the transmission. "Everyone" turned that feature off.

If working well, there is no problem. 'Twasn't the case here.

While AW built it into their 55-50 series units' programming, Ford, which owned Volvo then, is "credited" with dreaming up the foolish idea.

Also, regarding this gorgeous unicorn, make sure the TCM has its updates. The update I got for my 2002 was Volvo p/n 30677036. I felt an improvement the moment I drove off from the dealership. That was in 2009 on a different continent.

I'd give that find of yours a go unless I found some red flag.

I have possibly, but admittedly only once. It was a V70 2.5T auto phase 1, at about 120,000 miles I think. Belonged to someone I worked with and was completely standard except for an aftermarket LPG conversion.
The garage he took it to for repair initially thought it was a head gasket failure and replaced that. When that didn't fix the problem they tried again and this time concluded that it was a cylinder liner. Whether they knew what they were talking about we'll never know for sure, but they are a local independant with a very good reputation.

I *think* the update you refer to corrects the Neutral Control issues, but doesn't disable it.

The liner thing is absolutely not a myth. However it isn't a high boost R. It's a 2.5T
