2013 C30 Juddering Problem

Hi all,

Apologies if I'm posting in the wrong place.

I've recently bought a 2013 plate C30 D2 in red after absolutely loving the black one I had a few years ago.

However, I'm having some issues with the car almost 'juddering' in any gear. It happened this morning at a steady cruise of about 60mph in 6th gear.

The dealership replaced the fuel filter but this hasn't rectified the problem.

It also happens quite violently at lower speeds in 2nd and less violently as speed picks up.

The car has only done 33000 miles.

Do you have any thoughts about what this could be?

Before throwing money at parts I would take it a an independent volvo specialist or volvo themselves to fault find. I've previously had problems with juddering and it has been either a faulty injector but at that mileage that would be bad luck or I have had this with a faulty dual mass fly wheel but it did last a few years before going. Is your car manual? If the cars under warranty make sure you find the fault and get it fixed so it doesn't cost you.
Double check your engine mounts haven't perished.
Some specialist diesel fuel places that do injectors etc. Can test a lot of the fuel components on cars so worth looking for someone nearby if a fuel problem is suspected. Make sure the seller pays if it's under warranty.

I guess you have bought someone elses problem ,private sale no doubt ! I would let the dealer finish off the job , they can't just give it back to you like that , fuel filter was the first move however .. Likely to be a faulty injector I guess.

Hi, thanks for your responses.

I actually bought it from a KIA dealership who had it on their forecourt.

They're doing it all as a gesture of goodwill as it wasn't spotted when the car went through its checks (among other poor customer service issues I received).

The mechanic is stumped and changed the fuel filter hoping it would fix it. Alas, it hasn't.

He also checked something else which I've forgotten the name of in case they were blocked but that also appeared fine.

I would take it to a Volvo specialist but because the KIA dealer are doing the work FOC, I'm trying to save as much money as possible.

It is a 6 speed manual.

I would have thought buying through a dealership you should have some sort of warranty.
You could ask them to send it volvo to be fixed but either make them take it or in writing advise you to take and they promise to pay any costs back.
If they don't you could contact their head office informing of the problems you have, the poor customer service you received and lack of warranty if they say you don't have one.
There are many things legally you could take as you bought the car in good faith that it was in full working order and obviously wasn't.
If its on finance you could contact the finance company to act on your behalf or if you paid a deposit or anything on card you could contact the card company about your problems and they can argue you case should the dealer not want to help.
If possible make contact via recorded delivery letter or email then you have some proof of what's going on and with who.
Always avoid paying out until a last resort.

I have had two dealing with non volvo garages, their head offices were always more helpful and one of them even phoned the garage before we went in to tell them to expect us and sort the issue we had out.
When the other garage didn't want to honour the warranty work on my current V70 saying it was wear and tear on a used car etc etc. their head office sent me the cheques for the work done at Volvo (that was the quickest way for me as my car was used for work).

I think that if you bought the car in the last 30 days you can return it if there are issues such as the one you have, and they are unstable to fix it. I think the 30 days limit is up to when you report the issue. I can't remember the exact details but it might be worth looking in to.

I would be tempted to take it to Volvo for diagnostics so that you know exactly what the issue is. If the Kia garage still can't fix it, at least you can make a decision about getting it fixed yourself or returning it.

The KIA dealership is taking it to a local Volvo specialist on the 28th to try and figure out the issue as they have no idea.

Hi all,

So, the plot thickens. The dealer was able to get the car in at my local Volvo specialist today and they have been unable to find any fault with it whatsoever.

Now, they did a diag check and drove the car whilst plugged in to the diag machine and they are unable to find anything wrong.

Would the diag check have picked up this type of problem? I'm no car expert but I thought these things only picked up errors in electrical/computer components.

A specialist should be able to get there by his experience , skill and gut feelings alone without even plugging it in , I'm afraid the dealer is the only Volvo specialist in the true sense .. I don't mean particularly a volvo specialist , even if a bmw specialist went for a drive in it he would have an idea of what wrong .
