Please make allowances for my ignorance. I'm better with a spanner than a volt meter thanks for all info.

One more question Ron. Could a malfunctioning v reg cause ignition problems such as misfiring? are there any circumstances in which this can happen?

Arcturus;

As you know, VReg controls when Chg Sys is turned On and Off, which in-turn controls E-Sys bus voltage and Bat charge, so I suppose if VReg was not enabling Chg Sys and Bat was low, at some point, Ign Sys would would sputter to a halt...but that is quite unusual, and it would be accompanied by other obvious symptoms that sys V was very low...like nothing electrical working or inability to Start after it finally quit.

An occasional misfire is more likely a result of some other issue...keep looking!...start at Ign Sys...I'd connect (and trigger) a timing light (strobe type) to each Spark Plug in-turn, check if timing is steady when connected to Plug 1, but also if misfire is concurrent with spark dropout (Strobe doesn't flash!) when triggered by other cylinders...

Good Hunting!

Just fitted a replacement v reg' for a check. (AC Delco) Voltage at tick over 6.15 immediately after start engine revving 8.10. is that OK?

A;

OK at low RPMs (indicating Bat V, and before Chg Sys is activated), but actually just a bit on the high side at elevated RPMs...that would be akin to over 16V for a 12V system, and that could lead to an overcharged Bat, and possibly spewing acid...assure chassis connection is good on VReg, and all connections having anything to do with Chg Sys! I'd prefer to see that V not exceed 7.5V...but having just looked at this vid again, I take that back...see vid... of typical 6V system action under various operating conditions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzDj49BF4V0
...he even mentions that VReg should be adjusted such that sys V is 8V at 2kRPMs...so your 8.1V sounds OK (what's a few tenths of a volt among friends!)...just remember the general advice I always give for connections: Shiny and tight!

Cheers

correction, should have said Auto lite V reg. Just been out for short test run and PV seems OK with no misfire under load. The reading on meter on rev is 8.20.
This morning when I set off the car started to misfire. Came back home and got other car out. changed V reg to auto lite just now and car seems to run OK. Will give it a longer test tomorrow. need to sort out misfire before I refit 123. Will probably change all plug leads as precaution.
