Out of interest would you be happy for your car to be electronically limited to 70 mph?

Some time ago there was a suggestion that'they' could reduce motorcycle accidents by electronically limiting speed to the speed limit. There was also the possibility of linking car speed to GPS signals with the GPS controlling speed.

It was pointed out that GPS doesn't get updated for road works etc. Overtaking could become dangerous. It would also have to be retrofitted to all vehicles.

American freeways have much lower speed limits generally and stiffer penalties. They still have problems!

The limit (set by the government, possibly many years ago and based on the safety factors of vehicles and roads of the day) IS the limit, ie the maximum, allowed by law. Drive like a prat or drive like a professional that limit remains! If you are stuck behind a slow moving vehicle then you wait until it is safe to overtake, pass and go about your business. However, if you are behind a vehicle that doesn't quite hit the LIMIT, you break the speed limit and overtake and YOU break the law, like it or not! You do not qualify for an exemption because someone else was going slower. Frequently you may have no idea what is ahead of a large vehicle, you do not know when someone else that thinks exactly like you might come speeding towards you because they were behind someone going slowly and they had to get to their destination 5 minutes earlier than anyone else, just like you.

Whether we like it or not the laws are already in place. If some random jobsworth reports you for speeding, don't be surprised. If you run a red light just because there is no one around and you get reported, don't be surprised.

It is a trite and over simplistic message, but, don't break the law, relax and enjoy the ride, you'll feel much better for it!
The speed limit was not set at 70 mph as a safety precaution, it was set at 70 mph when we had the first fuel crisis, to conserve fuel stocks, it was never rescinded and remains in force to this day.....

And the point is? Crisis over let's just drive as fast as we can? Whatever the reason it's still the law! Campaign against the law instead of whinging about it being enforced, by whatever means.

There was no point, only correcting your statement the speed limit was reduced for safety, when in fact it was due to a fuel crisis.

Having policed in Germany where most autobahns had no speed limit, accidents were few and far between, but those that did happen killed everyone involved...

Hence the use of the word possibly. My point is that if a law so offends that it is ignored by individuals then those people should campaign to see it repealed.

3 years ago TOMORROW my 20 year old grandson was driven off the road by 'some f*wit' who didn't think the speed law applied to him. My grandson spent 6 hours, in an upside down car, and died alone. His birthday is Christmas Eve.

People who don't obey the laws, who think that they are better than others, who cause accidents and run away, don't deserve any respect, nor will I ever give any!

You ask anyone who has lost someone by another driver and you will hear the same.

Sadly, this time you’ve picked the wrong person, Mothering Sunday 1998 my 23 year old daughter was killed on the A1M, I have been in that position, so I know what it’s like, you don’t have to preach to me....

Years ago one of my neighbours was killed by a drunken bus driver. He'd finished work for the day, sank his usual 8 pints, and driven off as usual.
She was 17 and learning to drive.
