Volvo Geely merger

The Chinese owner of Volvo Cars is planning to merge it with his main carmaker Geely Automobile, The FT is reporting.

The move that would bring the Swedish premium manufacturer back to public markets and attempt to give China’s biggest private motor group more scale.

A combined company would be listed in Hong Kong and could seek a secondary listing in Stockholm under the plans by Mr Li Shufu, chairman of both Geely and Volvo Cars.

The move comes 18 months after Volvo Cars abandoned attempts to list independently.

At this moment in time the official line is that they're investigating the possibility of a merger, and the possible structure and set up of the company were they to do so.

As of right now it's not, officially at least, a firm plan (although personally I reckon its inevitable). Some news outlets are getting ahead of themselves.

Not sure about this, Volvo has a unique identity which may be lost. Geely have been good for Volvo under the present arrangement due to Volvo having a large degree of independence. As a consequence Volvo have been able to develop their own models, and achieve record sales. Why change something that works.
