Whats the options then Dai if you wwnt to move away from tapers? I take it the ES axle is also tapered shaft?

ES, is not tapered iirc but comes as disk only and they are now rather rare. For certain rally use they are not allowed.

For a road car the 240 axle swap and using the 240 brake conversion kit on the front is a decent swap but does limit wheel choice. The other axle of choice is a modified Ford explorer axle

Once you have fitted a disc brake rear axle and have added matching front hubs the wheel choice is enormous as it will include all of the 240, 700 and 900 wheels up to the very last 900 wheels when they changed to FWD types. Even those can be used with spacers.
Plenty of style size and width options. The 1800ES often gets fitted with 240 Virgo wheels which suit it well IMO.
