Default A different slant on spare wheel.

Today I picked up my 2023MY V60 recharge, so happy chappie. In the last few days I have been making enquiries about a spacesaver spare + jack at the supplying dealership.
On collection today I have been told that they cannot supply a jack or spacesaver spare because of instructions from Volvo UK. The guy was a bit confused, but i got the understanding the parts have not been homolgated for use on recharge cars, and therefore can't be supplied. There had been discussions re the extra weight of the hybrid and the strength of the jack and spacesaver wheel, but I suggested the extra weight of a hybrid V60/V90 would be no more than an XC90. I got no answer to that.
I did ascertain the jacking points for the hybrid are different to "normal" fuel cars.

I continue to research.....

Cheers
Bob

I'm of the firm opinion that all cars should carry a functioning spare and the means to fit it. Foam is not a suitable substitute.

Agree 👍 I have been optioning the spare on all my Volvos - can’t say that I ever needed to use one in the past 10yrs at least - but one day it saves me out of trouble - it will all pay off 😁

The UK online manual for the MY23 V60 Recharge makes reference to the spare as an accessory although it isn’t listed in the accessory catalogue.

When I went through this in 2016 with my T8 it transpired that there was no spacesaver available which would fit over the bigger front disks of the T8. I got a normal D5 spare and it will only fit the back wheel so a front puncture would necessitate a bit of wheel swapping...... Never had a puncture in 140k miles though.

I've never had a puncture in nearly 50 years of driving and that includes some serious miles in my days as a sales rep.

The cost in terms of fuel in hauling the spare wheel around for all that time must be considerable.

I've got a can of foam, a pump and AA membership so that's my spare wheel these days for my C70.

I wouldn’t have thought the weight of a spare would make any measurable difference to the mpg of the already very heavy metal folder C70, a lighter shoe on the right foot might, though.

If you translate it to all the cars hauling spare wheels across the country, (nevermind the rest of the world), that never get used then it's a massive waste of energy plus the resources used to make the spares in the first place.

It's a daft thing to do in the 21st Century.

The answer to this is every EV should only ever wear runflats.

Roll on 20 years and the car will detect a puncture and inform services, 15 minutes later the RAF will arrive in a Chinnock with a scrappies magnet hanging off the bottom of it and a crack team of armed mechanics who will surround the car and tell other motorist "drive round or die" until it's safely lifted to the nearest tyre centre.

I suppose it greatly depends on where you drive as well. If one sticks to urban zones and highways primarily - where there’s a lesser chance to get a puncture in first place - and you are always covered by GSM signal and roadside svces - then yes, I see your point. I do quite a bit countryside driving - particularly in the Alps - and potholes and rocks on the road are in abundance there - occasionally in areas with poor GSM signal. A can of foam won’t get me out of trouble in case of a rock-torn tire..
