Question Whine from air filter box

1996 960 3.0l 24v auto estate

I'm getting a whine under acceleration when first starting the car, which is coming from the air filter box. I've removed the air filter and this does effect the pitch (slightly higher, but shorter) than when in place.

Its quite noticeable when accelerating until the car warms up( 5mins), then it stops.

No noticeable effect on performance.................but I hate a noise that I know should not be there.

Can't see any blocked pipes (just a quick look to be fair)

Any thoughts ???????

cheers

Depends on your defenition of a "whine", if this noise is coming from the air filter box it would suggest an air leak which would tend to give a whistling or high pitched sucking sound. The air filter lid/cover can sometimes be a bit of a pig to fit snugly, causing a whistling sounds as it sucks air thru the gap. Check to see that everything is fitting snugly, also check all the air hoses/ducting to see if any are loose or have any splits in them. If all that lot is ok, check the air filter element, in particular the outer sealing edge to make sure there are no bits squashed or broken off, as again, any gaps would cause a whistling noise. If it's not air filter related, look at the drive belts as they can cause a whining noise, a very quick way to test them is to run the engine and give the belts a spray of WD40, if it alters or eliminates the noise, then either adjust or replace the drive belt(s) in question. Another area you can check if it's not the drive belts is the inlet manifold gasket, run the engine and spray some soapy water over the manifold and look for bubbling at the gasket joint.
