Default What causes black smoke ?

As the title says really. I have a three yr old 2.0D, 36,500 non DPF and tonight I booted it in 2nd and noticed a good plume of smoke from the exhaust in the rear view mirror. Can't say I've noticed it before. Usaually drive fairly easy and don't often push it through the rev range. Non oil burner between service grand car.
What causes this ?

What causes black smoke? Diesel?

You drive a diesel non-dpf meaning the diesel isn't filtered. ALL diesels emit smoke aka soot. This is normally burned in the DPF. No DPF - no burning.

It is totally normal BUT can be a sign that something isn't right. The diesel injectors have to spray ultra fine in order for the diesel to burn properly. If they wear off (which they will with age), you'll notice more and more black smoke - even when not driving heavy footed.

Kind of like an old car which is running rich. It will chuck out loads of black smoke...

Keep an eye on it. If it only happens on hard acceleration, then all is fine. If it does it more frequent at lower speeds in higher gears with little pressure on the -pedal, then something is wrong.

it also cannot keep up with the turbo and therefore will produce some when you give it the beans i tend to find with mine that plenty in 3rd and 4th does it some good also if you drop back to 70 mph on cruise for a distance then give it some then it will then i tend to save it up for tailgaters then go for it soon gets them off its worth giving it the beans to help clear the whole system specially the EGR valve.

One simple answer - EGR recirculating exhaust gas!

I don't even think the 2.0d without DPF has an EGR.

This is caused by EGR too, it cuts available oxygen from the charge under heavy load ie when accelerating.

All do. Mine is a Euro 3 and it does.

Black smoke is unburnt fuel. As diesel engines don't run stoichiometrically like petrol engines you will always get smoke unless it is caught in a DPF.
