Default Potential discount from used price

Morning all. I have got the funds in place to buy an XC60 for no more than £21000 from a Volvo Selekt dealer. I know that how much I might get off will depend on the amount they paid for it and what they have had to do it, how long it has been in stock, whether they are trying to meet a sales target etc but is there a rule of thumb that says don't even look at anything over, say,£21750 because you simply won't get more than £750 off usually? Or is £3000 off achievable in some circumstances? Do the amounts vary from chain to chain.
I don't want to waste the salesman time but I don't want to overpay. Thanks for your help in this area.

Put the reg of the car you have chosen into WBAC to see the lowest end of its value then pick a mid point between that and the screen price as your opening offer to the dealer?
for example there a blue 13 reg XC60 listed at 21000, WBAC values it at 16500, so my opening offer would be c. 18500 to 19250.....

In my experience from a dealer, from new you can expect £1000's off, but for used only £100's. But you won't get if you don't ask!

I got almost laughed at when I wanted 000's off my selekt car...00's is more realistic if anything, I pushed and eventually got £1000 off their price, which realistically was already priced very well compared to others.

So yes, some discount, not much I would say...

I looked above my budget, along with well above my budget and equally below, to see what you get for your money. It ultimately comes down to what you will compromise on with a used car.

I was very specific with what I wanted, so never had a huge selection...patience paid off, she's a beaut!!

You will generally have better luck getting dealer fit extras added for free as that doesn't cost the dealer much and increases the perceived value - go for things like the boot liner - invaluable, mud flaps - help keep it clean, interior rubber matts - keep the inside clean, etc.
