Finally got round to it this morning. Removed the caliper again; the dust boot slipped off the caliper easily and revealed corrosion between the piston and housing at the bottom where water has clearly been getting in and sitting. Cleaned off grot and blew out with an airline; sprayed silicone in joint between piston and housing.
Tried to refit boot and discovered why it had leaked and come off so easily. The steel snap ring moulded into the rubber of the boot had rusted away. By rotating the boot I managed to get some sort of grip for the ring as a temporary measure. Poor design if you ask me (ATE caliper); would have expected to see a groove for the inner of the boot to sit in. Reconditioned calipers and seal kits are like gold dust for the 316 dia discs. In the end I ordered a recon caliper from a national parts supplier but the manufacturers name I don't recognise and the part is rather too cheap. It arrives on Monday (bet it is the wrong one!). I have also ordered a caliper repair kit so I will have the choice of repair or replacement. We shall see.........
