Default S60 D3 2012. Fuel gauge over-reading

In recent weeks, the electronic fuel gauge remains stuck at 'full' for around 100 miles then reduces only slowly, so is very much over-reading compared with previous behaviour when each 'quarter' would equate to around 200 miles range.
Are there any fixes for this? I think my S60 pre-dates the software fix for the fuel gauge. And does anyone know what type of sensor it is (simple variable resistor and float, or optical or something even fancier!).
My current 'fix' is to reset the trip when filling to full and refuel before 500 miles!
