I agree, the number you listed is a vacuum boost regulator (often referred to as a Governor iirc).

So that is on a 163hp D3 Euro3. But do note I am no expert and this is just my assumption.

I've had a lack of power below 2k rpm for a decade now.
I found mine to have a tear in an internal membrane of this governor. It would cause the vacuum to fluctuate wildly on a mechanical analog vacuum gauge.

Once I placed a new governor, the difference was...... absolutely diddly squad, zero, zilch, nothing.

Same with replacing the turbo-inlet, the intercooler, the MAF, cleaning the EGR, doing a leak-back-test, having the injectors reprogrammed from "1" (previous engine) to "2" (current engine), putting the vacuum-line OVER the outlet instead of it just [pushing against it, etc.

Next step (which I have been claiming for years as well...) is getting the turbo out and cleaning the variable valves.

Thanks for all the advice etc.

I only think its a 185 as thats what comes up when you check the cars details by inputting the reg. I looked on the V5C doc but I cant see anywhere that it says.

Also, thanks for all other info and reply's. I have booked it into a different garage for a diagnosis on Friday so hopefully I will find out more.

Funnily enough, I've been boosting it all over recently and the error message hasn't reappeared and I've had no loss of turbo at all?!?

Hopefully it is an inexpensive fix!

I'll crack the jokes!!!

Wouldn't the 185 have a grey engine cover and the earlier 163 (with vacuum VNT) have black?
I presume that the 163 version of the later servo driven VNT would also be black?
Easy to tell apart...

No the Euro 4 both have silver grey covers.

Black cover, aluminium intake manifold means Euro 3 163

Silver cover, plastic intake manifold means Euro 4 163 version or 185

Easy to tell apart though like you say so no need for murphy007 to be guessing based on a reg search.

My mistake Chesh, I did mean to say "..also grey..."
Type in haste, repent at leisure!
The later Eu4 163 would also be badged as 2.4d as well whereas the E4 185 would be D5.

Hi again,

This is my car: 2006 SILVER VOLVO XC90 D5 S AWD

I dont suppose anyone knows why the turbo is intermittent and drops power at about 40mph? At that point the engine service comes on.

I drive it everyday to work and no issues - up to about 40 mph each day.

Could it be something simple like air or fuel filters?

Is it worth getting a turbo reconditioned?

What are the options?

Cheers!

I will post back findings.

@murphy: does it go into [forgot the name] emergency running* with low power until you restart? Or does it loose power and THEN throw a code?

The mechanical VNT control-arm on the Euro 4 seems to break off (others will know the specifics), I have no clue whether it will function intermittendly or just fail once and for all if this happens.

Can't edit my post, but as I am a stickler for correctness, I have to add that the "D3" mentioned above should be "D5" obviously... There were no D3's back then afaik.

* I think it's often referred to as "limp mode"

Hi all,

It is currently in with a local garage, they have been trying to diagnose for two days and have now come back with oil filter, oil change and turbo revive.

I love my old car and so have said to go ahead and we will see what the results are. It was quite dirty so I am always hopeful. The reviews on Turbo revive read quite well so you never know...

Anyone any experience of it?

Cheers,
Brian.

Hi again,

Well....

The garage called and advised it was a punt but it hadn't worked. Right enough, got in and had very little power, less than before.

The girls at reception commented on the amount of smoke that had come out and then the mechanic also commented.

I knew it was dirty and a bit 'coked' up but the seemed to think it was more than normal.

Anyway, I tried and tried to razz it a bit but had no response. Switched it to manual and tried, no response.

Then... the following day I drove it to work. I now seem to have immediate response, 5,000 revs when asked for it and no engine light!

Its only been 3 days but so far so good!

I am amazed and feel like doing it again to remove anymore but I'll leave it to see.

I will report back in a month or so to see where we are!

Totally worth the try!!
