Remember that there are millions of roads in Europe and the rest of the world covered by the navigation system and there must be constantly adding new roads or alterations/corrections and then there are speed camera updates as well

On my MK 1 XC90 you had to buy new DVD disc updates which where hundreds of pounds to update, so obviously not many people bothered after the first few free ones. Lots of second hand cars with out of date satnav data. Volvo should now be congratulated for making these regular updates free not moaned at. If you dont want them just ignor them but please don't moan.
Millions or road you will never drive on.
My issue isn't with the updates it's the update process. BMW/AUDI/Land Rover have a data plan and the car will auto update as new maps are released, no need to do anything.
With Volvo you'll need a USB and several hours faffing about downloading then uploading to the car or a PSIM is monumental amounts of data paid for by the consumer.
Doesn't feel very premium to me.

A data plan? Free, or ?
Several hours of faffing, that's not what it takes me to update the map.

I agree that on a car upward of 50k, Volvo should use the onboard Sensus Connect SIM to push new maps down, given that the option is there.

What I don't understand is why each update is so big. Surely here must be a way to do incremental updates of the changes only. At nearly 3GB for the NW region alone, that must be a complete download every time surely?

I started my car and North Western Europe map downloaded automatically over the air via phone data connection and only took 5 mins to download. The install takes longer but again nothing I have to do as it does it all by itself. I think the ota downloads only update the new data and not the full download unless it is required.

It would be great to know what is to be updated and how much data it will use I have 9gb data a month (I know I could get more 20 or so but I prefer a 30day rolling contract) and I don't want that used up instantly if the nav plans to update 49gb then falls over after 9gb

I have 20gb included in my plan every month with unlimited calls and texts. Which costs me 20 a month. The download took about 0.3gb.

Like anything in this world not totally free would be built into the purchase price.

However, good friend has an Audi S4 and has the virtual cockpit which is fantastic and streets ahead. Audi provide a data plan to support that and map updates. I suspect after 3/4 years there will be an additional subscription cost but up until that point you can use as much data as you like! Also Android auto is standard kit (no rip off 300 from Volvo)

Other friend has a BMW M140i with the same set up on data, not only that he gets a free subscription to Deezer so no need to pay for Spotify and again Andriod Auto/apple car play is standard.

Just feels if Volvo want to be premium they need to be offering these features as standard.

Remember it's not compulsory to update your system. If you don't want to spend the time or your data allowance ignore it. Personally I don't mind and the car updates itself once Volvo make the OTA update available, usually a few days after they release it on the support site, via the '3' sim in the car.

Thanks Dave, Excuse my ignorance what is OTA? And do you have any idea how much data you use updating maps via your '3' sim, 49gb?
