Wow!! Who put that kind of estimate on it - the auction house?. A nicely restored car by the looks of it, but it's an 1800E in not a particularly attractive colour (although very period, I admit). I believe there's a silver grey early Jensen-built car also on the market somewhere at £45k. This is Jag Mk11 3.8l territory and a little bit more would buy you a good XK150 or E-type FHC.
I certainly wouldn't keep a car of this value in a lock-up !!

Interesting to see if the car at H&H Auctions sells in 3 weeks time.

Well the 1800E that H&H Car Auctions were selling today was "provisionally" sold at a hammer price of £42,000. This was slightly below the bottom of the Auctioneers estimate of £45/55,000, but is a very strong price for at 1800E.
The auctioneer's commission will have to be paid on top of this by the buyer.

Marked as not sold on the H&H website so, presumably, bidding didn't get to the reserve price?

A p1800e sold for £45,000 there the other week

Anyway, I don't get it. How can the hammer go down at £42000 and then a day later it's available. Doesnt it become a binding contract?

If it didn't reach the reserve, then the seller may negotiate with the highest bidder, but no binding contract has been made.

Think the 18K is fair estimate for insurance perhaps set it higher?. resale is a different animal. I have mine insured for 22K the main reason is that to get a replacement like mine would probably cost that to do.

Following market trends over the past year (al la Classic car mags and auctions) prices have not been rocketing of late and values have actually fallen by 2K (source Classic car mag and auction sale). yes there are 45K cars, I am not disputing that but very few. Most between 12K and 22K.

I think most classic prices prices have plateaued of late (although the pension freedom may reheat it) other than a selected few. The biggest rise has been cars like the Lancia Fulvia. E type ect even the MK1 and 2 Escorts have reached their peak at the moment
Like most things it depends on condition and how much is someone is willing to pay.
As for colour, well again a personal choice, and if you are bare metalling it I would go for epoxy primer and OE colour. I have seen some very pretty cars in non original colours and whilst a purest may not buy them others will.
The debate on originality could rattle on and on but as someone who had a concourse MK2 Consul and used to show it and win, as soon as you upgrade, replace or otherwise alter the car, originality has gone out of the window.. and that incudes electronic ignition, 2K paint stainless bolts and screws ect etc... I am off to duck for cover now before the salvos start
