Turn the bonnet stops half a turn in and the catch should make a connection. The stops are the rubber coated nuts that align the panel. There are two, one each side.

I did initially try this but have since found that the actual bonnet catch/loop isnt supposed to activate the switch. Its the actual latch on the slam panel that folds down and touches the switch!

I Had the "bonnet open" message after I had closed the bonnet a bit too hard.
I had just bought the car (86 000) miles. I could not get it to go off until I used my magnifying glasses with illumination, and looked into the bonnet catch area on the left has side ( as you look at the car from the front) . If you look carefully you will see a red rubber switch with a shard of metal over it and a large catch which should rock over onto this shard when the bonnet is closed depressing the red switch. In my case it was the large catch which was stiff . I sprayed WD40 and wiggled the catch with a scew driver JOB DONE
