After the service yesterday, now noticed that the speed limit sign is now on the left rather than the far right on the HUD. The Service Manager told me they did not have to do any software updates, so now I am confused.

They may check to see if there is a software update, does not mean there is one.

Mercedes do not even check, they only check and update if you have a fault.

They normally do, but he said there was not one on the service sheet as they bill Volvo for it if they have to do the update. I did say I was surprised as it was at least 9 months since the car had been in.

Thanks for that. I am going to contact them as I thought also there had been quite a big update since I last took the car in. I need to check out PA as it looks like that will confirm if it has been done or not.
I have noticed that the some of the symbols and position of things on the HUD have changed so they must of done some sort of update.

I've noticed it appears on the left if it is using map data, and on the right if it has read a road sign. Or maybe its the other way round. But i've definitely seen speed limit signs on both sides of the HUD

I need to have a decent run to check out the ACC and PA. Looks like the changes are only to visual messages then rather than anything else according to the Volvo update page, which is surprising over such a long period.

Why cant you have the HUD and a heated screen?

Is it something to do with the elements in the heated screen.
