Done! The cable in the black housing (pointing upright in the photo) was loose and would slide up and down in the housing with no resistance. The handle would move the cable up and down without opening the hatch. I ended up doing what docjd did: I used an angle grinder to cut the top of the latch mechanism off. Then I was able to manually move the gear that opened the door. The latch mechanism was expensive - $366USD - from the dealer. Once I replaced the latch mechanism, it worked like a champ, but I replaced the rusted rod while I was at it with 4mm stainless rod.

Glad you sorted it out!
my replacement latch (volvo main dealer) was no where near the original quality-no brass in site and the metal finish/thickness appeared inferior-hopefully it will last until i replace car! |

Same problem
Hi all. I've the exact problem.
On inspection the handle moves freely and you can see the cable moving in and out of the lock mhanism sleeve, so not rusted shut although it could do with being replaced. My issue is probably the lock then, but how have people opened the boot to replace it? If I release the cable can I force it open? Once open can I close it again or should I wait till I have the part? Did anyone find an easy way to open a locked shut boot? Thanks in advance O |
