Default Volvo Rally... What better car to choose :)

Hi all,

I don't normally show my face around these ends of the forums... infact, its my first time as I'm in the S60 area

But, I just came across this link

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/kent/6259357.stm

Its about two guys doing a 4100 mile journey from the UK to Africa in a Volvo 360.

well, I'm not sure how these cars hold up, but its a volvo and I dont think they could have chosen a better car...
I've infact just read a thread about one chap on here who has done 180k and is now scrapping the car... it still doesnt say its died, just that its more maintenance than its worth at this moment in time... just shows .. they never die lol

Anyway thought it would be good reading for you guys

Thanks for posting the link Akash - I bought a 360 GLT a few months ago and I have really enjoyed 360 ownership! My 360 has the 2 litre reblock engine - it's so full of character - the engine is a pleasure to listen to, with the bonus of having a 2 litre injection engine in a light bodyshell! Even though the car is an 1988 the interior is "as new" I really recommend this car as an excellent runaround with lots of character!

My 340 1.4 (with the notoriously short-living B14 engine, borrowed from the Renault 5) is about 600 miles short of 200k. It had to have a replacement engine at 196k, but it hasn't needed much mechanical work in the time I have had it besides the engine a clutch, radiator, and a new starter motor. It was probably one of the most mechanically worn examples you'll find - I took it on for 'fun'.

360s are generally a bit tougher still. The guy who gave me ^^^ 340 has just chopped the roof off one and driven it to west Africa on a charity rally himself - probably a near-identical journey!

cheers

Haha yeah, these cars don't die, the owners just reckon they're not worth repairing anymore. The only real enemy on these cars is rust. All the mechanicals are fairly easy to sort out tbh.

That 360 in the news article looks very low down on its wheels. Slightly overloaded with stuff perhaps? On the car that I was involved in (convertible that James was describing ^^^) we modified the suspension by putting in a second leaf spring to raise the rear so it would sit higher so hopefully clearance issues in the desert wouldn't arise

Anyway good luck to them.

I'm hearing tales of Hugh's 360 pulling a 4x4 (I have a feeling it might be a Fiat Panda 4x4 though...!) the last 50 miles or so...and being able to climb hills that several cars couldn't manage solo

cheers

One of mines on 182,000 and gets daily use

Also make decent cheap navigational rally cars, my 182k one gets used on those too!

Not so....

The extra leaf spring really helped, with all that weight that's still sitting atleast 2" higher than my standard GLT does

Most likely to protect the paintwork.
A nice sand storm would see your paint being sanded off!!!.

And good clearance is a must on those sort of roads..

Des. . .
