Default Engine management light comes on - common in a V40?

So I was looking at this V40 on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Seller says in the description: "as is common in the V40 the engine management light comes on occasionally for about five minutes when its cold but it has never affected how it drives".

So...is this common and does anyone know why this is?

Default Engine Management light.

Used to have the EML light come on with the petrol V40 I used to have. Used to ignore it as it didnt affect the way it drove, didnt affect the mpg so saw no problem.
After so many start/stop cycles it used to stay off so again no problem. Cars these days are just too damned fussy these days with there electronic this and that. I used to change the plugs, always Volvo ones: and the air filter at least twice a year as well.

Smile Shouldnt happen

I drove an S40 for over 170,000 miles and 10 years, and the engine mgmt light only came on a couple of times when something had occurred, so no its not 'normal' there will be a reason why its on, and a fault code logged that will give a clue why, if an intermittent fault clears it seems to switch off the light, but the code i believe will still be there. What engine type is it? & year?

The ebay link posted doesnt work for me

My Galaxy's MIL is on permenantly, I check and clear it every now and then. But I know the reason.

DTC Cat Inefficient.

Down to a cheap undersize aftermarket CAT, that were sold just 1 month before new regs came in that made it illegal to sell them
