Volvo Spartacus 17 inch on 225/45/17
Hi all,
I'm looking to replace my Dunlop tires on my original volvo spartacus rims. I came across an excellent deal for a set of 225/45/17 Vredestein Ultra Satin. The seller (tyre shop) told me that it is a fairly common tire to fit as a 205 replacement. Anyone who has done this and who can explain the handling differences. Any disadvantages or advantages compared to the recommended 205/50? |

I have 225/45/R17 Michelin CrossClimate tyres on the 17" spartacus alloys.
I wouldn't say I notice any handling difference, I got the wider tyres because they were cheaper and give a lot better protection to the alloy itself (I no longer scrape the wheel on curbs!). It works well I've had no problems, go for it!

Be careful, the 225/45 is a size that wasn't a 'factory' option size when built, therefore this size is not approved for your car.
Insurance-wise they would get twitchy about this, I've had conversations with both insurers and Volvo UK about this very issue and Volvo said "you must only fit tyres in a size tested and approved by the factory". The list of acceptable tyres is behind the fuel filler cap. You could declare the change to your insurer as a modification (that's what I tried) but they started getting nervous about a tyre size that was not 'ok' with Volvo..... I stuck with 205/50 which are more expensive with limited choice.

Legality-aside (no comment on UK laws) there are no issues whatsoever as fitment. I was a bit sceptic myself as my AWD is really fussy about tyre discrepancies, but changed 205's to 225's on September and very happy about the change, saved about 100e on full set of Eagle F1's, tyre is few mm wider but I cant feel any difference in handling/comfort etc. Behaves exactly like on 205's.

I might need to contact my insurance then before buying a set. I don't want to get in trouble for saving a few quid
good to hear that handling wise it's pretty much the same. |

I ended up with an email from Volvo stating that only the tyre sizes tested and approved by the Factory are acceptable.
