Not a real rally car. No, if I can keep it running, it's maybe a gimmick rally car!

I'm not sure of actual speed and distance with the 4.1 rear end, but by on board instruments, had her up over 50 mph and drove about 52 miles without any incidents. Last few shifts on the way home may have had the slightest clunk in the rear end, perhaps the universal joint. Brakes had the slightest pull to the left. A tad hard to start when up to temperature - as if the battery was weak or poor battery connection. Probably could use some suspension bushing.

But not stranded and nothing of which to complain. Car felt pretty good, all things considered.

Looks good.I think that only the "sport" models had trip meter. Brakes will always put a smile on your face,or is that a terror grin! Live with it and anticipate. Make sure that all your ground connections are bright and clean,especially to chassis. Is it a 6 volt? Finally, don't tighten your steering. There needs to be an inch or two free movement,side to side at standstill. Check and top up oil in steering box if necessary. Enjoy

So today I was left to ponder: With a 4.1 differential versus a stock 4.5, my engine runs about 91% for any given speed. 4.1/4.5 = .91111111 .

But is the speed recorded on the speedometer accurate? Is the Odometer accurate?


Edit: according to this calculator, my actual speed will be about 10% more than what is indicted on the speedometer. Can that be right?

Measure it against a sat nav,Tomtom/Garmin for example. When measured like that my PV speedo runs 10% fast. Impresses the passengers!The size and type of the tires will have an effect also

If the axle and the gearbox are original it should have the matching gearbox speedo gear to give accurate speedo readings. Tyre size needs to be correct but early cross-ply tyres can be slightly bigger in diameter than the normal 165/15 radial replacement. Car looks good.

I suppose that I'm now thoroughly confused about my drivetrain.

From all of the literature that I've seen, the car was originally supposed to have a 3 speed gearbox. My transmission is a four speed marked "Type M-3, Det Nr 254160 and Tillv Nr 1450. (see post #80, page 8). I think the type M-3 is a 3 speed gearbox, but I don't know. In my box of "spares" (loosely defined), I do have a shaft that I assumed was a transmission first motion shaft. Perhaps the transmission was modified from 3 to 4 speeds, but I think it is unlikely since the transmission cover was modified. (see post #94, page 10). I'll need to examine and identify that part more carefully.

Now the differential is also unexpected. All of the literature that I've seen shows a final drive ratio of 4.5:1. So after scarping off decades of greasy buildup, I was surprised to see a the 41/0 tag on the differential, indicating a 4.1 rear end.

I like the Chris' fridge magnet idea. I also need to do something like that for the key bypass / button under dash starting instructions.

Don't worry so much about the numbers. If the car feels all right in the gears, short in 1st and 2nd, can pull away quite easily in 2nd from standstill, easy comfortable cruising at about 60 mph in top, just sit back and enjoy.

Not complaining, just confused. I think I'm far better of with the 4 speed gearbox and the 4.1 differential.
