The master cylinder is now back in the car and the fluid level has not reduced, so it looks like job done. However, I will look inside the hubs and around the calipers for other signs of leaks in due course.
A good quality set of circlip pliers is an absolute must for this project, unlike the rubbish I bought from Halfords. A question: is there a correct fluid level inside the reservoir? I've always aimed for about 2cm from the top.

The rebuild kit for the single circuit master I just installed failed to hold pressure. The installation went smoothly, as did the bench bleeding, but pedal kept going to floor after copious bleeding. So now I've got to go with a whole new unit, as I don't have the time to keep messing with it. Second Volvo brake rebuild kit I've bought that didn't perform as it should.

Make sure the cup washer on the rod that's held in by the circlip is the right way round. Cup should be to the outside to allow the rod to come back fully and allow the piston to come back past the fluid hole from the reservoir.
Adam, 2cm is OK, depends where you're measuring from. The anti splash "dish" on the cap should probably just be above the top of the fluid but I'm guessing, again... |
