I know when my D5 is carrying out a regen as the exhaust becomes more boomy (it's just a straight pipe from the cat / DPF back) & once in a blue moon I had in fact experienced that same boominess at lower than motorway speeds, so that does indeed back your info up.
VW Group engines will regen all the time, and mine would regularly carry on after i got out of the car, even after 30-50 minutes driving. Frightened me the first time with the fan roaring like that. never had a DPF warding light though in 3 years. never revved it when cold (drove like a nun till oil temp above 60C). Sure driving style was a big influencer.....

Bought an obd2 bluetooth device from ebay just now (£3) and will get the Toque app when it arrives. Mainly out of interest. I'm sure it will come in handy at some point, and at £3 doesn't really matter anyway!!

I use AutoDoctor on my iPhone and I scared a dealer yesterday when busing my daughter a new car yesterday when I pulled out the Wi-Fi adaptor and plugged in it to check for any codes - none found

She now had a Mitsubishi Outlander and I am impressed with what you get for not a lot of money!

I use "Car Scanner ELM OBD2" app on my Android phone in Volvo V70 D3 MY2012, and it is really useful with Volvo - you get DPF soot in grams, catalytic converter temp, engine oil temp, coolant temp, ATF temp, EGR duty and EGR error, and many other OBD parameters.

So I always know how much soot has accumulated in DPF, and my regen always starts around 25,6 grams. Can also confirm that under DPF regen the EGR valve is set to 4%.

Apologies for dragging up an old thread, but I have a MY14 D5 (no stop start, so EURO 4?). How much of this content would be relevant to my car? Will there still be 5 stages of soot build up?

Having only owned the car for 10 weeks or so I'm not used to DPF regens and cycles. In 2000 miles I've only noticed one motorway regen which lasted around 20-30 minutes and no other regens at all. Only sign was the drop in instant MPG, no boomy noise. But the past week/10 days I've had a lot lower average MPG on my commute (too short really for a diesel at 7 miles and never more than 50mph), this morning, when I arrived at work I had a rev and did notice a boomy noise, not so when I got home tonight and the average mpg was higher, but not as high as I have seen in the past.

Thinking of taking the car for a 20-30 minute dual carriageway run on monday, just to see if it helps to clear the soot. Would like to get to know my car and when I need to take it for a longer drive to help clear it, or if I should just continue as normal and hope for the best.

I do wish there was a symbol or better yet a message on the dash to inform a regen is taking place!

I doubt it was a Euro 5 engine then. Yes I looked it up and it was a Euro 6.
