Not that I'm an XC owner...so what do I know. .

But in my searches online and numerous 2nd hand XC's, I don't think I've ever seen someone mentioned "new gearbox"... There has been maybe 3-4, but be "safe" and say "at least 5" mentioning gearbox troubles... But there has been a lot lot more mentioning new engines, engine trouble, "oil leaks which are a big job to sort".. granted that doesn't put any one in the clear, but it seems to me that more often than not they're built to last...

I just hope if/when I find one, it's one that is built to last and not one that all the duff bits went into haha..

Wondering if anyone can give their opinion on the following choices:

One XC90, 05 plate, It's done 115k miles, £2500 serviced up to 85k and it's over 200miles away - private seller so no warranty etc - whatever use a warranty is.. one advisory on MOT, (which is valid until march 2019) nothing particularly big to worry about

Or the other one.. 54 plate, it's done 143k miles, £2999 FSH, one advisory on MOT (similar to above advisory) valid until Dec, trade seller so 3months engine and gearbox warranty.. but it's like 70miles away... Both same colour, both satnav etc..

Just thinking to get to the far one, I'll need to spend money on fuel there and back, or transport (hire a car or something).. the close one is an easy drive.. but it's an extra 30k miles...

Any advice just based on the above? Suggesting that those are the only differences between the two and one isn't a complete dog etc...

I would be more tempted by the 05 plate.

Hmm yeh I know, lower miles, longer MOT, newer and cheaper... but not been serviced for 30k miles... and I might end up spending near half the distance in getting to it and getting it back... If only they were the other way around!

Don't confuse lack of documented service history with " It hasn't been serviced in over 30k miles". It may well have been very well serviced by the current owner.

My XC90 had a lovely FVSH BUT as soon as I got it in February I did everything including cambelt and aux belt kits myself so that I knew it had been done properly.

No documentation for my work other than receipts but it has definitely been very well looked after since I got it. In addition, I don't believe that the fuel filter on mine had ever been replaced in it's 11 year life yet the book was fully stamped up.

Lastly, as for travelling I never give it a thought for the right car.

Woman I messaged said partial but I need to clarify, travelling will be no big deal, but it's just getting there during daylight and before she sells it to someone else... Would probably have to hire a car to get there really..

If I were traveling to buy an XC90 - sight unseen (as I and many others from far afield have), I would look no further than Seb. He will pick you up at Warrington railway station. See the testimonials.

n.b. He has 2 XC90's coming in this week - including a V8 !!

Why don't you document it?
There's nothing to stop you writing the services down that you do yourself into the service booklet.
Makes for a better FSH history presentation should you ever decide to sell the car

To the OP:
Those selling prices are ridiculously cheap regardless of which car you go for
You get a heck of a lot of car for that money, compared to the new prices.
You're talking about 5% of new car value....
