Default D4 engine oil

According to the manual, the correct oil for the new D4 is Castrol Edge Professional V 0W-20, which seems to be rather difficult to track down.

Does anyone know if you only get this from dealers, or is there a reliable place to source some? I'm used to having a spare oil carton in the garage but on the few times I've gone to get one Google seems to come up short.....

Thanks,

Andy

How important do you think it is to get the actual recommended manufacturer and grade, as opposed to "just" the correct grade ( ie 0 - 20 ) ?

On previous cars I've used Opie Oils ( www.opieoils.co.uk ) and whilst they don't do the Castrol, they have a 0 - 20 from Motul and ***hs. The Motul one is reduced at the moment ;-)

Edit : swear filter seems to be blocking "F U C H S" for some strange reason ;-)

Their website has a search by car, and it says 0 - 30 for the V60 D4.......

They are a user on here - oilman - send thema PM, really helpful guys, plus looks like they're doing a 15% discount at the moment - check the Trader's Offers forum

Ah, spotted why their site has it as 0W-30 :

D4 engine D4204T5 ( 181 bhp ) : 0W-20
D4 engine D5204T3 ( 163 bhp ) : 0W-30

it's not been updated for the new engines

Not sure whether it's important to stick to the brand so will drop Opie a message, thanks for the tip. It appears the Castrol one has been developed for the new engines, so I can imagine what the response would be if I ask the dealer.

Think I would be inclined to stay with the manufacturer recommended oil as I read somewhere that it was formulated especially for the new D4 engine.

Wouldn't want someone saying that your warranty is invalidated if something goes wrong and you've used different oil.

My opinion of course.

I recently tried a number of petrol stations and Halfords but couldn't find it anywhere, dealer confirmed it was unique to the D4 and they were the only stockists at the moment

I've read this too - somewhere on Swedespeed someone's posted a Volvo tech description of the VEA engine, which specifically states the engine is designed to use a special 0W20 low-friction oil developed by Volvo for it.

I'll try and dig it out.

EDIT - here it is, see section 2.4: http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthr...ght=VEA+engine

Why is the engine requiring top up between services?
I've had two Volvo diesels (D5 & D3) neither lost oil between services in over 100,000 miles.

I'd be asking if this oil consumption was 'normal'.

It's not a case of it needing a top-up, but I'm used to always having a spare litre or so around in case it does, especially if it needs a type that's proving hard to track down....
