Default Bu**er Me.

The dreaded "engine check" warning came on this morning.
This is the forth time in 17 months of ownership.
The previous occasions were all related to oxygen sensors and the last time, the car was in the workshop for 3-4 days for EGR valve and cooler to be checked out.

My nearest dealer is over 100 miles away.
Have been on the phone to them and they are fully aware of my previous visits and I now wait to find out what they are going to try next.

Sorry to hear that

I wonder why some cars seem to need O2 sensor replacement and others not? My car's 14 months old and 14K miles, I had the EGR and cooler replaced in February this year at around 7K miles but not had any problems with the sensors ....

Look on the bright side, it isn't a VW

And you know when it is fixed the performance and fuel consumption improves

This thread has been running for 10 months, owner's are onto there 3rd & 4th "fix" and we still do not appear to be any closer to a solution.

Does anyone know what a "fixed" car is ?

Slap on the wrist fully accepted for being so flippant

Is this not a recall yet?

I'd be very upset if I broke down because of a problem part volvo are aware of and have a replacement for.

Fast forward a few years. There will be a sizeable number of VEAs running into their extended warranty periods, years 4 and 5 (either 'Volvo' or independent insurer). If the problems are not solved (for good), how will the warranty providers react when several thousand EGR (and other associated issue) claims are made ?
I predict some challenges ahead, either refusals to pay up for some spurious reason (it's wear and tear guv') or other exclusion. Then expect some risk of a class action against Volvo - but that's difficult, because our contracts are not with Volvo, but with our dealers, and we may feel uncomfortable about taking our dealer to court when he is 'piggy in the middle'. A mess.

A bit reminiscent of the Pre 2007 XC90 AWD splined sleeve which failed regularly and could cost a small fortune.

Volvo were fully aware of the problem, yet never recalled the cars. Thay did of course update the part in 2007ish models to negate the problem.

After much pressure they did eventually agree to make a goodwill payment against failures dependant on age & mileage.

I've recently had my second EGR valve replacement (first one when the car was 8-9 months old, second one at about 17 months). I want to keep the car beyond 3 years, but I'm becoming increasingly concerned that this will be an ongoing issue with these engines. It's difficult to get a true picture of how widespread the problem is. I think I read on the forum that the unit was re-designed to address the issue earlier this year, but with several forum members having had multiple replacements since then it doesn't inspire confidence....
