The adjustment isn't made with the valve, that should always be tightened up snug. Early floats can be adjusted by carefully bending the tap that pushes on the valve. Don't try and bend the hinge. The later plastic floats are non adjustable and should fit correctly and give the correct level. The stay up floats are non adjustable. All manuals, Haynes etc show how to measure the drop using a suitably sized piece of rod. There is a bit +/- but logically you should get les problems with flooding if you stick to the low end of the range i.e. using the largest diameter rod that matches the numbers. Burlens would say that if the non adjustable types don't give the correct figure they should be replaced. Of course many of them will have been got at and it may be possible to correct the maladjustment.

After I have sorted the leaky pot on Saturday ( hopefully ) I have booked it in Monday morning with I K Classics Huddersfield way. They Set up and race classic cars and have a rolling rd / Dyno. Going to get them to do a full tune.
Will let you all know how I get on. Once again many thanks for all replies.

Just removed the top of the float chamber without having to take air filter out
( only just ) the chamber was very low on fuel. topped it up with fuel , put it back together. All working perfectly , no overflowing. The only conclusion i can come to is. When i parked the car uphill and left it for 10 days some of the fuel in the float chamber evaporated and the float stuck down allowing the fuel to overflow. Going back to the garage now to fit my ( expensive ) hi torque starter motor. Still booked in tomorrow for tappets / timing / carb set up on rolling road at I K Classic vehicle restorations Dobroyd mills Huddersfield.
Thanks for all the help. Hope this post may help others. Paul

How did it go Paul? Are you a happy camper and engine running spot on now?

I K Classics was an amazing place (when I managed to find it ) In a mill complex the far side of Holmfirth. must be room for 200 + cars. there is a car museum and a Classic car theme café. They had a Bristol ( one of only 5 ever made ) A C cobas and some very unusual cars . They also have classics for sale. A great place to visit if you are ever in the area. Not picked the car back up yet . Hoping for the weekend. The owner did have a look around my car and commented on how nice it looked. Praise indeed. He also told me of a P1800 that he had in a few months ago that was sold as concourse. There was so much wrong with it. No heater mechanism . Many engine faults. Too many problems to list. Looked good on the outside though. Just goes to show buyer beware. Will let you know how it runs after rolling road set up. Regards Paul

Got the same issue but my SUs are missing the dust covers over the vent holes. Wouldn't warm fuel vapor consensing from cooler outside air cause this apparent leakage?

Mine was pouring out. Float stuck down after fuel level had dropped in float chamber.

Shouldn't they vent into the air filter?

There are 2 holes in the float chambers just underneath the fuel inlets. If the float sticks fuel pours over the exhaust heat shield. Rubbish design.
