Other XC90 Problem: Mass Air Flow Sensor and Heated Oxygen Sensor

Hi All

This weekend the engine warning light switched on and the message was "engine system service required". I had got the car serviced in January with Volvo and it has been regularly serviced by them FSH

Took it around to the local independent garage they reset the message and said monitor how it runs and if the message comes back on again.

And after a couple of days the message did come back on.

The diagnostic report mentioned two things
ECM-135F Mass air flow (MAF) sensor - Signal too low
ECM-28E0 Heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) - Signal too low

Been quoted £700 to replace both I guess no one would be happy with that number. The garage said the parts are expensive but when I looked at Euro Car parts they seemed to be not too expensive.

Would buying a part from Euro be a big no or can you please recommend where to get hold of affordable parts or garage or any advice please - I am located in East Midlands.

The total with discounts for both parts comes to £350 incl VAT & would have to add labour to this.

Hi, may be usefully info, I used euro car parts for a lambda sensor and mass air flow meter in January this year though not on my volvo but on my Lexus IS no problems since, in fact I think the mpg has improved slightly and it passed its emissions on the mot ok last week

Have you actually checked with a Volvo dealer as to what the parts cost actually is? .... you may be surprised as sometimes its not as bad as you think .... don't forget FRF Volvo give forum members discount .... check their thread on the forums "discounts" page.

Worth a check.

Heated Oxygen Sensor - £312.12
Plus £118.80 for Labour

I feel a parts darts situation coming on here,

700quids worth of parts when all it wants is a 2 quid swirl arm or a turbo hose replacing,

Just because it has fault codes in for it doesn't mean its actually that part thats faulty

Update

I found a better price after calling a few more dealers - saving of £143.
Did not make much sense to go with cheaper parts for £50 difference.

So reasonably happy with deal getting it fixed tomorrow.

I guess the lesson is to call a few dealers and not settle for the first quote.

I did call FRF but found them same price on one part and expensive on the second part with discounts included.

Will keep them contact list for future price checks

If you are keen to replace MAF and Lambda, get these from ebay. Used MAF can get for about £50 and brand new Lambda for £110 isch. Lambda has original Bosch number. This part was used not only in volvo.

BUT... I would look for the boost issues and/or EGR first. These faults usually come up when there is too low boost pressure. Too low boost pressure - more black smoke which you dont see anyway because DPF is fitted

My advice - dont waste your time and money buying expensive sensors at the moment. Find a reputable garage or specialist who has good understanding in engine diagnostics and has good knowledge reading live data.

I think further diagnosis is required before spending any cash - the likelihood of both parts being faulty is very, very low - unless one of them pre-existed and wasn't bad enough to put the MIL lamp on.

Update -

I took the car to the dealer in Nottingham and mentioned that I have been discussing this issue on the forum and mentioned the suggestions I have received here

The point I made was that there might be an underline issue as per advice received here and I also requested they check DPF which they agreed.

Engineer took the car & came back in 10 minutes and said nothing wrong with sensors but there is a leak in the intercooler which is causing the sensors to be reported.
He took me around and explained the issue, clearly there was a leak and I could hear a sound which he explained was due to the leak when he put his foot on gas. I must say the engineer was very patient as I was lost for words.

The engineer went on to explain that very rarely do both sensors require replacement if at all and usually it is the hoses that leak before the intercooler.

So I have arranged to get the repair done next week with them

What has really annoyed me is that the dealer I went to in Leicester gave me a quote for £700+ to replace the sensors after checking the car out and also charged me another £26 for diags - what a scam.
I was very close to leaving the car with them as they were keen to get the work done. I dont think I will be visiting them in a hurry.

I will be calling the dealer in Leicester tomorrow to complain about the poor diags and quote they gave me.

I also checked with a friend who had a S60 and they said to stay away from dealer in Leicester as he was given mis diagnoses and paid for a bill that was never the fault. He also went to dealers in Nottingham for a second opinion as they fault was not fixed and they rectified the issue at a discounted rate as a goodwill gesture because of what he had been through with the Leicester dealer and paid for something that did not require repairs - it was a power steering issue.

I am relieved that now I think I have a good garage and hoping this will be on the mend.

Will keep you posted on any new developments.
