1996 940 keys
I have a P reg, 1996 940 SE LPT estate and have lost the second spare key.
I would like to get one cut but there may be a chip in it for the immobiliser? When I got the car I never had the Volvo guard fobs, as just lock/unlock manually with the key. I'm hoping it would seem the alarm has been deactivated and hopefully the immobiliser too? Would de activating the alarm also de activate the immobiliser? If so I can then just get another key cut and no expense of programming the new key. James |

Imobiuliser is in teh ECU.
You can change the ECU or fit a chip to remove it. Volvo can supply new keys off your REG or chassis no |

Regret to report that OE keys are no longer available.
My key failed to talk to the car coupe of years ago (lost tuning) so as a temporary fix I removed the fuse to deactivate the alarm & immobiliser and now open by key alone. As a consequence the clock and interior light and something else on that fuse don't work either. All this irritates regularly and I'm minded to get the original re-tuned. Spare key (my '97 Classic came with only one) was cut by a local auto key specialist (about £45, maybe more). Seem to remember that it has a chip and can also be tuned to the car. |

Thanks for the replies.
Not good news then! It sounds like my alarm/immobiliser hasn't been de activated then as interior lights and clock still work. Probably the alarm was just not activated. I'll have to try and get a key cut and coded Can the shop copy the code from the old original key and code it to the new? Have no fob and not bothered about getting the alarm working. Probably £50! I had a hole in my pocket and seem to of lost the 240 and 940 original main keys. Thankfully had spare 240 and 940 originally came with 2 key sets. 240 got another set cut but 940 more complicated as immobiliser etc. It was a good time to give my Lexus IS and 240 second spare key sets to my Nans. 940 will follow once sorted. Scary as it may seem James, it might be quicker, cheaper and easier to get in touch with Volvo and see what they come up with.
They can also confirm/deny what immobilisation your second key provides, if any and assuming yours has never had any locks changed, probably supply new genuine keys for a similar price to an independent specialist. Don't get me wrong, i'm all for saving money and not spending it at Volvo when the same product is available elsewhere at 10% of Volvos price but sometimes it really is the most cost-effective option to go to Volvo. For example, on my 760 the ignition key only operates the ignition - it should do all locks except the fuel cap. I've found evidence of a "gentle" break-in and it has an aftermarket remote keyless entry system/alarm. Volvo can supply another key to my VIN which will probably operate the other locks but because it would appear at least one lock (presumably ignition) has been changed, there's no guarantee. At least you have keys you know will operate the locks, it's the immobilisation that's the problem for you.

Immobilizer
It could be that you do not have an immobilizer with FOB key as Volvo took this in production for the UK in week 36 of 1996.

The key chip immobilizer is a completely different system to the alarm (which may have a starter motor immobilizer). The RFID chip in the key basically authorizes the fuel computer. So the engine won't run without it unless you replace the main chip in the computer to one without the immobilizer code. It is never deactivated, the engine will just run if the proper key is there when it is turned on. It may operate fail safe, so if contact with the key is lost during running it won't switch the engine off.
The chips are fairly standard and can be easily removed replaced and I believe 'programmed' into your car, however I've never done this. |

The top key in the pic looks like the RFID key (it will at least have a slot for RFID chip), the lower one is not.
You can buy the chips on ebay I think, but not sure if any additional equipment is needed. |

Immobilizer module
The RFID key is paired with an immobilizer unit. On a LHD 940 this unit is located somewhere behind the light switch and has about the size of a package of cigarettes. On a RHD it will probably be at the other side.
There is no way to bypass this system other than replacing the (chip in the) ECU. If you do not have the top key you will almost certainly have no immobilizer unit and any replacment key will work. |

Then ask how I re-program a new key and try the key cutting and re-programming companies. If very expensive or not possible don't bother and keep only key safe! James. |
