the transmission was slipping but did not notice this on a test drive and ws from a private seller. only happened when you put your foot down. i dont believe the transmission was ever serviced. needs to be serviced every 30k miles which i will be doing from now on.

I’ve had both. And never had problem with neither of them. The GT on a D5 XC70 and XC90 AWD, and now a PS on a V50.
I’d go for a PS simply cos it is newer. I believe it’ll last. Mine was not serviced regularly prior purchase, but now it is by me. Good working order and only can recommend. Especially on a V50 I think a 2.0D is more than enough. Bear in mind I NEVER put my foot down. I have a 6yo. I want to get from A to B. The MPG downtown is bad for me as my work is about 7min drive from home. But not really using the car much for commuting. On a freeway it’s AMAZING! If you’d put 20K in it a year, probably that’s a factor, don’t know. All in all PS is amazing and turned out to be reliable in my case. I know ford has the same setup as Volvo but the problems only seem to be present on their car not on Volvos.

ford and volvo powershift
sorry to make a note but the fords are not the same as the volvo powershifts
the latter is a wet/oil clutch and the other is dry clutch the dry clutch fords are the problem areas. change the oil for the powershift on a volvo every 36k and you will be good to go and get the adaptive reset all in all buy the oil for this box via opieoils and replace the volvo gearbox filter also the same on both volvo/ford - same parts and it should be no more than 95 quid through a volvo specialist to change and reset the adaptives. |

I've owned quite a few auto transmision cars & wouldn't put the Geartronic up there with the best. I had no problems with mine but just found it's operating characteristics a bit irritating. Such as not the smoothest shifting, too willing to shift down at motorway speeds when calling for mild acceleration when you just want the torque of the engine in top gear to accelerate you (I got round that by selecting top manually, it then held in that gear on the motorway) & it's habit of just dumping the box into top when on the overrun, meaning there's no engine braking -especially downhill in town- meaning you have to manually select lower gears to get engine braking. Not the best auto gearbox IMO. Make sure you get the fluid changed at least every 70,000 miles, Volvo say it's sealed for life but that's BS. I changed mine at 80,000 miles & it made a mild improvement to the shift quality.

The 6 speed is better but these were always econo-car automatics used in Vauxhalls and the like, and were never on a level with the likes of the contemporary ZF HP5 and HP6 transmissions you get in RWD European cars.

The filter isn't very big. Its quite long and narrow in a black casing. Its not as big as a fuel filter or oil filter for example. I believe the Powershift transmission's were used in the 4 cylinder 2.0 litre variants. Geartronic was used in the 2.4 5 cylinder engines. Powershift has a filter you can change and is accessible. Geartronic on the other hand has no visible filter... I assume its inside the transmission itself, so can't be changed without dismantling.
