Largest tyre size without modification
What's the largest tyre anyone has fitted to 15" steel wheels? Anyone done bigger than 205/65/r15 without changing anything, i'm aware it'll affect the speedo reading.

Not 100% but they are fairly slim so I expect 6j, look the same width as my omega alloys.

Then anything larger than about a 205 on a 6J wheel probably isn't a great idea. It's more about the appropriate angle of the side wall of the tyre. I think you'd have to look at 4X4 tyres which have a thicker tread to the edge of the tyre which would probably give you slightly more width.
You could always band your steels and then the tyre size is only limited to what you can actually buy. I don't think you'll get more than a 225 in a 15 inch tyre though unless you look at drag radials and then you're only limited to summer driving :P I think you'd have to go up to a 16 inch to get tyres around 245. |

If you download the "Speedy" app for your phone Jason, you'll probably find the 205/65/15 have corrected the original speedo error and it actually reads correctly or maybe a smidge under at the important speeds, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 mph so you may need to do nothing about the speedo error.
http://appcrawlr.com/android/speedy Another useful thing is the tyre size calculator from etyres - other companies have their own version, i find the etyres one easiest to use : http://www.etyres.co.uk/how-to-change-your-tyre-size/ You need to scroll down a bit to find it. Put the original tyre size into the left had bit (195/65/15 is usually the default size) and enter the size you're thinking of in the right and it tells you how close the new size is to the original size. If your speedo reads say 10% fast on 195/65/15s then you'll gain 2.2% of that back with the 205/65/15 tyres. I had 195/60/15s on mine when i got it (all fairly worn but legal) and my speedo was reading about 7-8% fast. Now with a new set 0f 195/65/15s it's about 3% fast. Give that app a go, you'll find it's pretty useful if you're trying to work things out.

All this speedo chatter depends on how accurate your speedo is in the first place. If you have rebuilt it name your number if the needle has not been set quite right! I find my sat nav is a far better gauge than my tyre size ... when it seems to keep bleeping at me

That's why i suggested downloading that app Bob - it's a GPS speedo so gives a benchmark.
There are technical limitations to GPS speedos though, they assume the earth is flat so if you're going down (or even up) a steep hill, the speed could be pretty different to what the GPS reads. Think about an Iscosceles triangle, the point of the triangle being the satellite and the two base corners being the start and finish positions - that is how the GPS speedo sees things with the car on a paper map with no contours. Factor in the slope and the speed could well be different!

i use 205 60 15s on the project, loads of room with them, thats a 6.5j wheel, offset corrected to ET18
as far as i know, you can get 225/50/16 to fit, but the fronts scrub at full lock, cant confirm though, |

On the 16 inch diameter wheel, the recommended tyre size is 205 x 55 x 16
Has anyone tried going up to a 60 profile? |
