Volvo v70 2.4D 2006 spares or repair
After nearly five years of smooth motoring the V70 has decided to let me down and is now for sale on the bay, just in case anyone on this forum might be interested.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/282883036146?ul_noapp=true Two Volvo specialists have diagnosed problems with the Hydraulic Lifters and quite possibly a damaged rocker. At a minimum the cam shifts will needs to be removed so the lifters and rockers can be replaced and if the cylinder head is damaged the cylinder head will also need to be removed. The other option would be the replace the engine with a used one. The car starts and will still drive but it now goes into limp mode. It will still be possible to drive the car onto a tailor though. The car is currently located in Northamptonshire and will be SORN in the next few days. It has an MOT until the end of June this year. Any questions please let me know. |

So you've been told a problem with the lifters is causing it to go into limp mode ? I'd be interested to know the root-cause, as 130k is no more than average for one of these, most are still running without issues.

I’d thought the exact same thing, and would have been taking a punt on the car if it was closer.

I'd definitely want to be eliminating the EGR valve & EGR position sensor as a first step, these are the first port of call on the euro 4 in limp.
Be interesting to see what VIDA picks up.

Have asked the seller some questions on the ebay listing to try and narrow the fault down as I'm too far away to pop down to view it. I'll post up on here to assist the sellers thread (if suitable) if I choose not to buy it - the main thing putting me off is that it's auto and I much prefer manual!
Much depends on the transport costs as I don't fancy driving 150miles with a car in limp! John - I've not much experience of the E4, could the swirl actuator/arm cause limpmode if it's broken? |

I've been out and about trying to locate a run around for transport over the last few days so I have not had any time to check this forum.
I received some questions on ebay, but it was a nightmare to respond as ebay has a 1000 word limit on the phone app. I first noticed a problem on Tuesday 27th Feb. The weather was very cold at the time and I drove the car to an indoor dome for a game of tennis. When I left at about 9:30 the windscreen had frozen so I started the engine a put the blower on. I then got out of the car and went around the front of the car with the windscreen scraper. At that point I notice what I thought sounded like a blowing exhaust sound, which unusually was coming from the front of the car. I assumed it might have been a cracked manifold at that time. As it was freezing cold and there was no way I was walking I drove the car 3 miles to where I was staying for the night. The car drove fine with no warnings. The car remained parked until friday 2nd Mar when I drove it the Sheffield and Meredith (approx 2 miles away) and asked if they could have a listen to the engine. The car still drove absolutely fine fine no warnings. As soon as the guy opened the bonnet I could hear that the noise of the tappets was much louder than normal and I knew that it was not going to be a simple one to fix. After checking to oil (which was ok) I was told that it was the hydraulic lifters that were the most likely cause of the problem, and possibly a rocker may have also broken. Apparently they had done a few before and they described the problem as an issue with the particular engine that was in my car. Assuming that the cylinder head was not also damage I was told that I would be looking at a minimum of a £1300 repair bill and if the head needed to come off the costs would be higher. Sheffield and Meredith could not look at the car for a couple of weeks and I was not sure it was worth fixing so I the drove the car back to where it had been parked in Leicester (approx 2 miles). Before I made the final decision to give up on the car I decided to ask A R Mills in Banbury if they could have a look at it. They had been servicing the car for me for a few years and I know that they are decent. On the Monday the 5th March I drove the car the from Leicester to Northampton and parked it up for the week (it drove absolutely fine yet again with no warnings). On Monday the 12th March I drove the car from Northampton to Middleton Cheney, Banbury OX17 2ND and after I turned off the A43 and got about half way along the A422 the car started to go into limp mode and the dash displayed a warning about soot. One of the guys from A R Mills had a listen to the car and confirmed word for word what the guy at Sheffield and Meredith had told me, so I have little doubt that the diagnoses from both these garages is accurate. A R Mills also showed me a cylinder head that they had from another Volvo that had the Hydraulic lifter issue and a broken rocker. So it is definitely an issue that can occur with these five cylinder engines. At that stage I drove the car back to Northamptonshire and parked it up as it would cost me more to fix at a garage than the car was worth. The engine warnings and soot warnings were on during the drive back to Northamptonshire but the car did make it. Last edited by Saltdog; Mar 15th, 2018 at 12:24. |

Did either of the garages plug it in to VIDA diagnostics ?

The car is located in a village near to Pitsford Reservoir in Northamptonshire.
Neither of the garages plugged the car into any diagnostic system they just listened to the engine noise. |

Thanks for the info, the car’s not for me as I can’t justify a e4 diesel with the use I do (3000 miles/year) - should have thought about that earlier.
Would love to take a look and see what’s wrong though. Surprised neither garage plugged it into Vida. Good luck with the sale. |
