Default Front skid guard

Can this be removed to repaint stone chips? if so how?
This is the metal plate below bumper centre front.

Hi, it just unbolts, lift fwd to disengage if I remember correctly, although as its a safety system on the car, it would be unwise to use the vehicle while the guard is removed.... do a search I'm sure IanU had a thread on doing his.

Hope it helps

Yep its easy to remove and repaint, and there is no mechanical or structural impact on the car as a result of driving it without it fitted but Volvo have given guidance in the past that it is positioned such to aid the activation of safety systems on the other car in the even of a collision (and hence they say you shouldn't drive without it fitted).

On 06 xc90 D5 there are 4 bolts (obvious at inboard ends of support beams) two more ( note to self grease on refitting as these corrode) accessed through holes and run through cross member into dogleg over cross member. Not 4 that some suggest.

Got it off after a struggle but unsure what it is made of?
Perhaps galvanised steel with powder coating as magnet sticks. Not rusty like steel would under paint blisters.
I will blast it and see about what finish afterwards but so cold to work outside may get a coated or two of etch primer and wait till better weather and remove bumper to make refit easier.

Smile Its like this (2006 model)

Its made of alloy.
Had mine shot blasted and powder coated for about £50. Still looks good 4 years later.
Some photos below.

When removing it you may struggle for room on the drivers side as there is a cooler for the power steering fixed in front of the radiators.
If you do, loosen the cooler bolts first and there is enough movement to slide the skid guard out.
(see photo).
The cooler bolts may be corroded so a good soak in WD40 and be prepared to wedge a screwdriver on the captive nut as it is housed in plastic and can turn.

Good luck
