Default Steering wobble

My XC60 has a steering wobble, like a wheel balance issue between 50-60mph that is more pronounced under load. Wheel balance has been checked and is fine. Anyone got any other thoughts on what it could be? thanks

Could easily be a bent rim.

It might not be noticeable on the balancing machine because it deals with and compensates for rotating masses - but when driving your wheel isn't round so car is basically jumping up and down.

If you can jack your tyre off the ground you could put a wooden block with a pencil, etc pointing just next to the lip on the inside (usually most prone to bending) rim. Get someone to rotate the wheel while you keep an eye on alignment of the pencil to lip while lying on the floor infront of or behind the car ( no need to go right underneath). Any up and down 'movement' in a small section could be your problem.

Rims can be straightened (check youtube) by specialist machinery.

Did it happen suddenly?

As well as obvious wheel damage or balance issue (weight fallen off etc) it could be a damaged or out of round tyre

If not could be:

Brake disc imbalance. A build up of pad crud on the disc can give you these symptoms

Have all steering/suspension/wheel bearing components checked

It's a November 2012 (2013MY) but I have covered 94,000 miles now, best get someone checking the suspension as it needs to tow 2000 miles in the summer at pretty much exactly the speed the steering wobbles
