For those interested see attached is a description of the key, section 1 states that it has a LF induction coil to enable car start if fob battery is dead

If the battery in the key fob (whatever the type) is dead, the fob has to be powered somehow in order for it to communicate with the car. I presume this is via induction coils and in both the cup holder and the key fob. I was merely wondering whether the small fob had this facility given its limited size.
Yes Thats what I understood you were saying, I meant it should work the same if battery has died and placed in the centre console.

Thanks guys, some interesting points well made.
So the functionality of the simple key is as i understood although i had not realised that once the battery is dead it is no more use (unlike the ‘proper’ key fobs which do of course have a replaceable battery) so I think i will use the simple key on occasions and the normal key at other times.

As for the kick opener for the tailgate - i seem to have had the knack from the moment I got the car on Weds - it works every time. I understand from your responses this facility cannot be disabled so I will have to be vv careful when passing the car while in the garage - yesterday it opened when I was working around the rear of the car and boot opened (i did not intentionally open it) but car was outside so no issues.

Thanks very much and will i am sure be back soon with more questions pls.

Remove fuse No 15 in cargo area fuse box to disable tailgate kick opener, normal operation of tailgate will still work but foot operation will not with fuse removed.

Thanks. So it works in a similar way to how my Merc did except that the Merc broadcast the LF signal continuously for up to 72 hours at which point it went to sleep to conserve the car battery. This meant that keyless entry stopped working after 72 hours and you then had to unlock using the button on the key fob.

The Volvo system is better in that the LF signal is only transmitted when you touch the door handle. The downside of this is that it precludes the facility to have the car's lights come on automatically as approach lighting when you get near the car. Of course you can do this with the Volvo key fob but who can be bothered getting the key out just for that.

I am glad that isn't so in Belgium, I don't consider keyless entry a feature but a safety hazard.

The cover of one of my keys broke and would not latch properly and yes, they replaced it under warranty

Care to explain? I really don’t see how keyless entry could be dangerous in any way..

I mean the risk of the car being stolen (perhaps a security issue instead of a safety issue?)

C’mon.. who would steal a volvo??

Seriously..Opening the doors is the easy part.. with or without keyless entry- all SPA cars have keyless start as standard.. so equally easy (or difficult..) to steal..
