The first and perhaps only thing is a solenoid refurbishment or replacement. First option can go like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nh0rp7HSrw or you can purchase them off Ebay (Rostra)

Also don't forget to measure the resistance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=das2i6eIPRc

I suggest that you talk to these guys, Seem to give sound honest advice and do not start by saying you need a new gearbox.

Valve body change on XC 90 AW TF80SC approx £400 plus 3-4 hours labour quoted. Cheaper if you supply the oil.

brilliant, credit to a guy that takes a computer controlled gearbox apart with a lump hammer and jewelers screwdriver ! I would have stripped the valve first though , and then decided if the core was free or sticking, but can someone tell me
1, where the valve is and how to remove it ?
2, are there 6 solenoids (one for each gear shift ) and how are they numbered ?
3,does their removal require a fluid drain ?
mine still doesn't shift smoothly 3rd to 4th , so Id like to have a go at cleaning the relevant solenoid

Superb, thankyou - i'll try here first!!

Just seems excessive to spend £2500 on a £2500 car? Hopefully i'll find a solution..

Not scared of having a play with it myself but could do with a helping hand to guide me through it if i'm honest!!!

The Lucas stuff might be worth a try but yeah, so many horror stories!!
Where are you buying your ATF from?
THis is enough to do a full flush

I keep hearing horror stories about the non-volvo oil too? 20L for £88 sounds lovely though!!

They have been in business since 1925 and have 100% feedback on eBay - unlikely therefore that they would jeopardise their reputation by selling dodgy oil so I have just bought some, and will be doing a flush this w/e weather permitting.

OMG - just checked Vida and says you have to remove the subframe to access the control body cover and the box has to be drained. Has anyone managed this without removing the subframe?

If you want to remove the Valve body you do need to drain the box but his can be done via the drain plug (otherwise it will piddle out when you remove the cover...)

You can get away with dropping the subframe on the LHS of the car and raising the gearbox (disconnect the 2 vac mounts, top & bottom torque mounts) but it is fiddly.

From talking to various about potential issues the consensus seems to be that initially the valve bodies suffer from sticking pistons in the body i.e. steel body/alloy housing and the like.
I have done a bit of research and I have been advised that BG Automotive "Quick Clean" Pn106e breaks down sludge and could possibly clean the valve body.
NB this should be done as part of an oil change and then add BG automotive ATC plus Transmission oil conditioner to fresh oil.

Mine has never been changed but has only done 77 k miles.

BG Technical did advise that the quick clean is normally only used as part a full machine flush as per Volvo.

I have ordered 20 liters of Mannol JWS 3309 fluid as per Toyota tranny that it is and will do 4-5 drain and fills which should be about 90% replaced and run for a few hundred miles and change it again.
for less than £100 got to be worth a shot as it might give you breathing space to look at options.

Have a read of this

IMHO changing the valve body under your own car is a recipe for disaster unless you are well stocked with garage equipment. Personnally I do not believe this to be the average DIY task The amount of potential debris that could get in from around the car is not to be scoffed at. Believe me dirt is not the autobox's friend!!!!!
