Very sad, and ludicrous that the tests are allowed to happen on normal roads with vulnerable road users sharing the same road space. The human factors aspects of autonomy are way behind the technology and the technology is insufficiently advanced to deal with the complexity of the situations that occur.

I also can’t fathom how they plan to handle the insurance situation, who is culpable?

In the last stats for 2016, 37,461 people died on the roads in the USA yes that's 100 per day or 1 in every 9,000 people.

Bound to happen to a driverless car sooner or later.

Just noted that the link now shows a video clip with lots of Uber Mondeo-type cars.
Here's a screenshot which shows the XC90 which was involved in the incident :-

Can't imagine Ford are too happy that all the major news outlets are using pictures of their cars....

I imagine Volvo will try to distance themselves from this as from what i can gather it is mostly Uber tech.

Unless it was a failure of the City-Safe system - see the attached image taken from the Volvo website with an ironic subject :-

These cars have a much more advanced scanner on the roof rather than city safe.

Of course if the lady dashed out 3 feet in front of a car doing 30mph, no one can stop in time.

Volvo confirmed the vehicle was a Volvo XC90, which Uber has been using special versions of in its testing. Russell Datz, a spokesman for the automaker, said the autonomous technology was not made by Volvo.
So, actually, the poor guy was killed by an Uber- not a Volvo. Heavily modified for autonomous driving- I can imagine they disabled and/or modified most of the safety/collision prevention features..

Of course volvo will try to distance themselves from it but they jumped into bed with Uber and must be providing a lot of tech assistance to get the Uber kit integrated with the car.
