I would expect to see an increase in accidents as the autonomous systems improve which may seem counter intuitive. But I believe studies have shown that the longer you go without having to intervene the less likely you are to take control when things go wrong.

The problems start when you get idiots strapping drink bottles to the steering wheel so they can leave their hands off the wheel when in pilot assist and then post videos on youtube for others to follow this dangerous practice, yes there is a well known Swedish Volvo vlogger with a video out there. He does say dont do this but as we know you will get idiots doing it.

It’s too early to jump to conclusions. We don’t know if the driver in charge lost attention or if the cyclist suddenly turned into the car or fell over or what. One assumes the Volvo still had all its safety features intact and working in which case the exact same result could have happened had it been a standard Volvo.

Some dashcam footage has just been released showing the moments before the impact and it doesn't look like the "driver" could do much about it as the lady just suddenly appears out of the darkness. But shouldn't the car be able to detect people in darkness coming from the side as that seems to be a situation like an animal running across the road at night?:

Ive just seen it as well and yes I believe she unfortunately walked right in front of the car, it (and he) may well have braked but it was too close.

It’s pretty obvious that the driver was not paying attention, he was looking down. Lidar must have seen it crossing and probably reacted but the cycle was far too close for it to stop in the time available. At least that’s my reading without hearing the official report.

‘Driver’ is clearly looking down on a regular basis but that is almost certainly going to become the default behaviour in automated vehicles regardless of any other instructions or warning. Given this is a right hand drive country and the pedestrian is walking left to right, they clearly didn’t just step off the pavement into the path of the car, nor were they cycling fast across the roadway. Something led to the lidar not seeing the pedestrian, or not considering them as a collision risk.

It is really sad news that someone has died with this new technology. Watching the footage it made me think about the cars LIDAR system did it not detect the lady? Or does it not predict she will cross into the path of the vehicle? I know LIDAR doesn't care about lighting conditions but I'm sure we will find out more about the onboard systems and the status level in due course.

I wonder what the comparison of miles driven vs accidents is for driverless cars vs human drivers, I assume it would be much safer for the driverless car systems but perhaps not.

Exactly; clearly a failure of the system as it appeared to make no effort to brake or avoid the collision. An adult pedestrian with a cycle should've been easily recognisable.

Also, what's the point of the 'driver' in these test vehicles (with unproven or under-developed software) if they're not paying attention?
