For those interested see attached is a description of the key, section 1 states that it has a LF induction coil to enable car start if fob battery is dead

Thanks guys, some interesting points well made.
So the functionality of the simple key is as i understood although i had not realised that once the battery is dead it is no more use (unlike the ‘proper’ key fobs which do of course have a replaceable battery) so I think i will use the simple key on occasions and the normal key at other times. As for the kick opener for the tailgate - i seem to have had the knack from the moment I got the car on Weds - it works every time. I understand from your responses this facility cannot be disabled so I will have to be vv careful when passing the car while in the garage - yesterday it opened when I was working around the rear of the car and boot opened (i did not intentionally open it) but car was outside so no issues. Thanks very much and will i am sure be back soon with more questions pls. |

The Volvo system is better in that the LF signal is only transmitted when you touch the door handle. The downside of this is that it precludes the facility to have the car's lights come on automatically as approach lighting when you get near the car. Of course you can do this with the Volvo key fob but who can be bothered getting the key out just for that.

I am glad that isn't so in Belgium, I don't consider keyless entry a feature but a safety hazard.

I mean the risk of the car being stolen (perhaps a security issue instead of a safety issue?)

C’mon.. who would steal a volvo??
Seriously..Opening the doors is the easy part.. with or without keyless entry- all SPA cars have keyless start as standard.. so equally easy (or difficult..) to steal.. |
