On stock models the main limiting factor at high rpm is the exhaust system (i.e. can't shift the gases away quick enough) Later models i.e. Me7's and the later S60/V70R's came with modified exhaust manifolds and slightly different downpipes which help.

The crankcase ventilation system is also a weak spot so you have to make sure it's up to the job before tuning or even as standard as the pipes and oil trap clog up which produces oil smoke from the dipstick tube.

Induction side is pretty good as standard, the air box is good for circa 300bhp if you drop a performance panel filter in, the intercooler is not on the small side either although aftermarket uprated Front Mount ones are available.

I'm on t5d5 already and have been for a good while - never entered much into the tuning side of things though.
